Ben & Jerry's Back in Japan

Ben & Jerry's flagship store opens in Tokyo with new design

Ben & Jerry's will open its flagship store in Tokyo on April 14, on Omotesando Boulevard. The location will feature a 1960s-era design theme with a tech café feel.

Ben & Jerry's selected Tesser, a San Francisco-based branding company, to create the store design. Tesser designed the company's flagship store in Burlington, Vt., and was hired to recreate that success in Tokyo.

"It was like making a great flavor that's perfectly balanced," said Ellen Kresky, director of creativity at Ben & Jerry's, "Tesser was able to fold Ben & Jerry's history into contemporary culture to bring the Ben & Jerry's vibe alive."

Tesser's biggest challenge in designing the first Ben & Jerry's location in Japan was to build a brand presence in a visually stimulating city. The flagship store has a street-facing entrance framed by Tokyo's premiere shopping mall, Omotesando Hills, by architect Tadao Ando.

Better go before the start fucking it up by making a bunch of shitty original flavors for the Japanese market.

Häagen-Dazs uses high fat cream, a minimal amount of relatively classic ingredients for flavor, and uses no stabilizers such as guar gum. Ben & Jerry's also use high fat cream, but are known for using a lof of different ingredients to make new, creative varieties of ice cream - and they add stabilizers to their product.

I know what you mean, but I guess what I wanted to say was, do we really need a lot of these shops around when B&R has already set up a shop in every shopping mall throughout Japan. Because I assume that will be their ultimate goal. Right?

I find most ice cream here disgusting, especially Haagen Dasz. It is just too fornicating fat.

If I have to choose, I'll buy 17 icecream (you know those from the vending machines).

The same can be said of almost any business so I don't really get your point. Personally, I like B&J better than B&R.

Most the ice cream in Japan sucks because it's not real ice cream not because it has too much fat. The Japanese do seem to fuck it up like most other Western foods though.

To tell the truth I had no real point. I guess I was just trying to make sense of the opening of another franchise.......... If you think B&J is better than B&R I suppose that would be a good reason for me to try it out.

I was in Omote Sando/Yoyogi park a few weeks ago and the amount of coin the B&J must have laid down for this launch must be staggering.

Every streetlight up and down Omote Sando had a B&J flag and then outside Omote Sando Hills, there was a huge promo with dogs dressed up in cow suits, promo boy and girls also dressed in cow suits and lots of pamphlets going out into eager hands. Big flags on the side of Omote Sando Hills and also roaming people and dogs in cow suits in amongst the Sakura in Yoyogi park.

My son was most impressed by the dogs but then he even waves at the Hachiko bus when it drives past as it has a dog on it. But he is only 19 months so he is allows to be obsessed.

But wow ... promotion these days ...

Most of the dog suits here are in micro rat Chiwawa size so they couldn't get any to fit - or they couldn't find any cows small enough. You decide.

Does this mean they've opted to offer dog flavor in lieu of macha or sakura?

God, I've been in Japan so long, when I heard Ben & Terry's was coming here, my first thought was "Geez, I hope he catches that smarmy little mouse and smashes it to pieces for once."

Actually I got the same thought as SDH at first...

We got them cheap amurikun cartoons as filling broadcast material everytime the crew of a TV channel went on strike...

And christmas night (after the midnight mass) always got some Droopy rerun marathon...

AND it was the good times... before the systematic reruns of "highway to heaven" or the shitfest were Gary Coleman is a dead kid turned angel back to earth to help for sumthing...

Thanks amurika... real quality entertainment here...
