Japanese bras flop

Bra vending machine proves a bust
The Asahi Shimbun -- 2013Dec29
...
Osaka bra vending machine busts, with just seven sales in month. "It must be something that takes time to get used to, but I would like women to see how it feels to buy a bra from a vending machine," says official...more...

"It must be something that takes time to get used to, but I would like women to see how it feels to buy a bra from a vending machine," says ...

...someone who should be shot in the head before coming up with even worse brainfarts...

Seriously, stuff was lost in translation or there really is a new class of imbecile who really believe that buying underwear from vending machine is a necessary experience ?

but I would like women to see how it feels to buy a bra from a vending machine

My guess...

LIKE SHIT, MUST FEELS LIKE SHIT... It's one step lower than the self checkout lane at the supermarket, all the cost cutting, none of the convenience...

Meanwhile if my local hardware store could have an outside 24h vending machine with assortments of screws and nails in various size... That would be totally awesome for night tinkerer...

with as much trouble finding a bra that fits and feels right as women tells me it is, this had "non starter" written on it from the word go.

Panties...un-used, CLEAN ones...maybe. Maaaaaaaaybe. Like, outside a love hotel poooooossibly.

But bras? That's like...like a vending machine that sells Gloves, all in plain cardboard boxes, no window to see inside, and you can choose sizes small, medium and large, but not men's or women's, and there is no chart telling you how big they are.

Alternatively, it like a used MEN'S underwear vending machine. Just not gonna sell at all....

I suspect not all japanese women really wear bras. The wife gets by with those form fitting tops with the foam cup lining.

Does she also buy them bulk from Cecile ?

At first I thought she was just pilferring on her grand'ma's leftovers bra...
Then I discovered that they were still selling victorian era monstruosity...
It's even worse when actually shopping for... They try to sell 2 size and 2 cup too big... Totally given up any hope...

Re: Japanese bras flop

But who leaves the house needing a new bra during the day?

The idea was just ill conceived. A vending machine target market is people who need a commodity while out and about - usually a consumable - food, drink, batteries and even pr0n is a suitable consumable. The exception would be toys - gacha gacha style but given how often my son loses them, they can fit into the consumable bracket.

A bra is something that women like to shop for... the shopping is nearly as interesting as the owning of the item. So buuuu big fail on target market.

Hmm, if women actually enjoy shopping for bras, then only men are left as potential customers to buy via a vending machine.

I guess the tranny market is not too big...

Given shop opening hours in Germany I'm not surprised. Needs must ......

No, you're right. 10 years at least. I take it that it's all changed then?

Very much so. Radical innovations like 24-hour supermarkets and Sunday opening were beginning to come in around the time I left. A far cry from the days when normal shops closed at 2pm on Saturdays (except for the first Saturday of the month when they graciously stayed open until 4).

It depends on the area, but the further you go into the inaka, the more that applies.

I've made a game of asking all the younger inaka bumpkins what they do for fun. So far 99% of them have answered "visiting with friends at their home" :frown2: That leaves 1% of people that actually have lives.

How far are you from bright lights and big city? It makes a difference if you can get a dose of city whenever you need it. Anything inside an hour driving is good for me. On the other hand, if you really like places like Roppongi and activities like hanging out with herds of shitfaced foreigners you might have a problem (and you need to have your head examined).

I still haven't even come close to exhausting all the things you can do in the inaka that you can't do in the city.

Something I want to try sometime soon: the Sugo circuit is just a quick hop, step, and jump away from where I'm at. Like maybe a 20 minute drive. http://www.sportsland-sugo.co.jp

Oh, I'm not complaining, I get my dose of city life after work here in Tokyo. Like you, I can go on and on about what you can do in the inaka...though the list definitely is affected quite a bit by the seasons. The temple is near enough to downtown so there's that....but when I ever decide to break free from repairs and upgrades on that place, I want to go hiking, skiing, etc etc etc You got Sugo, I got MaZe: http://www.mazecircuit.com/ (complete with 90's style website!)

I'm just perplexed by all the youngin's there who do nothing besides visit with friends and take trips to the mall. I guess it's not too out there when their parents are spendin' all their money at the local mega-sized pachinko parlor. (holy fuck, more and more of those being built!!)

Yes, inaka activities tend to be seasonal (because they're mostly outdoors), but at least there are several for each season. Well, except for the dead of winter when my favourite activity is staying indoors. If I ever decide to take up golf again watch out, because there are nice courses all over the place, and they're cheap. The only problem is that I really suck at golf, and would rather save myself the embarrassment.

But pachinko does seem to be the inaka pastime of choice for many, and I've grown so inured to the pachinko parlour ads on TV all day that I hardly even notice any more. I don't remember pachinko ads on TV in Tokyo or Kanagawa, but maybe that's just my failing memory. Pachinko is the "sport," and ramen is the food. All over the damn place, and I never go to either (well, ramen very occasionally).

Skiing, hiking, fishing, parasailing, growing stuff, photography, flying RC, cycling, etc., etc., ... it's all there, all you have to do is get off your (my) ass and do it.

Oh, I did find a couple of decent pool halls where I can go and shoot pool for an hour or two to clear the ol' brain when it's too cold to do outside stuff.

And then there's Sendai just 25 km up the road, where there's so much to do I've hardly even started on it yet.

Almost five years and not bored yet.

Exactly my sentiments...though explaining that to city J-peoples just elicits the usual 田舎に何もない

Any suggestions on where one can do some good lazy man's hiking? (ATV, Snowmobiling, etc.)

Minus the excessive driving, I get the best of both worlds though so I can't really say I'm full on inaka-jin.
