Salarymen just can't get a break

Postby Samurai_Jerk » Tue Jun 30, 2015 1:39 pm

Japanese Men’s Allowances Lowest Since 1982 as Living Costs Rise

Japanese salarymen’s allowances fell to the lowest in 33 years even as the cost of lunch surged, showing the pinch felt by workers that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is counting on to drive a recovery in the economy.

Monthly spending money, often set by wives who control family budgets, dropped to 37,642 yen ($306), down 4.9 percent from last year, according to Shinsei Bank Ltd., a Tokyo-based lender whose data go back to 1979. Salarymen spent 601 yen for lunch on average, up from 541 yen, reflecting higher costs of food and a sales-tax hike, the bank said.

Stories like this almost make me believe in this Men are The New Victims stuff. Unless wifey is making it for you, how in F'in hell do you eat properly for 561 yen a day???

Anybody here ever been put on The Allowance? Oh, the happy memories of telling my ex to GFH over that one.

Or half (to pick a random proportion) bring their bento from home, pushing the average figure for the lunch-buyers to over 1,000 yen.

I wonder if Shinsei correlated this study with testicular shrinkage?

Define proper. You can get a take-out bento and bottle of oolong tea for that. Not to mention lunch at McDonald's or a gyudon shop. Besides even if you pay the typical 1000 yen give or take for a lunch set at a real restaurant in Tokyo, you aren't necessarily getting anything much better.

I'm sure plenty of guys are bringing bentos from home.

None of which qualify according to my definition, even allowing for that masochistic love of crap food so many emasculated guys have. And WTF is it with fucking poor people buying fucking bottles of anything to drink? That one eats my F'in brain. A 2L thermos of tea is worth about 12 yen and that's if you buy the handpicked organic leaf stuff. Add in 138 yen for a mondo package of those ready easy tea bags and you're chugging for next to nothing. If you're too stupid, listless or lazy buy one of those mondo packages of cold water infusion Mugi Tea. Extravagant poor people make me want to buy a bullwhip, or at least a human sized flyswatter.

If my lunch allowance was 561 yen per day or WTF it is and I wasn't getting a righteously Kokoro Komi Komi Bento 8 F'in days a week there'd be one more form being filed down at the local ward office toute suite

Not that I am on an allowance, but another way to increase your lunch budget, and to do so substantially, is to give up tobacco. You still don't see that happening.

I would give up on the allowance first, but yes, that's certainly not a bad idea. Apparently it can be an unhealthy habit, and with some I see about an 800 yen a day one at that.

So, any of you on one!!???? Still one of my favourite WTF culture moments all these years later. I wonder how universal that practice remains amongst Jpn couples. I get that many of them prefer it but with so many more 2 income couples there must be some renegotiation.

FTR, I paid for almost everything anyways, but that was a specific monthly amount not the whole pay packet handed over.

No allowances for me, but we have a kind of unwritten rule that for big expenses both wifey and I should agree. The definition of big shifted over time as my salary rose.

Of course, this type of arrangement only works if both parties have a certain degree of spending discipline.

Among my colleagues and friends, the most henpecked guys with the smallest allowances seem to be FG's for some reason. Maybe the wives feel a stronger need to keep those barbarian tendencies in line.

In my case the terms of our relationship were established in the UK long before we moved here. She's had a go at implementing such a system but met point blank refusal on my part. Almost all spending goes on the credit card, 1% cashback thank you, and we can squabble over the bill at the end of the month.

I don't drink at all these days so there aren't any bar bills that need funding. Larger purchases are by agreement in advance. Otherwise I buy what I want/need.

Lunch... give up tobacco? No way, it is eating tobacco that keeps the worms at bay... or so it is with horses.

Never been on an allowance in this life - but back when I first started working, for those initial years, there just plain wasn`t enough salary to survive on. If it wasn`t for the kindness of relatives and nearby farmers, we would have starved. Homemade onigiri at the desk was lunch and tea was supplied by the company.

It's simple. Like kids in the ghetto who buy $200 sneakers or people in trailer parks who have home theaters, it's a luxury they can afford. It might seem illogical not to cut all unnecessary extras and save as much as possible but for most people in such situations that won't change their lot in life. They'll still be living paycheck to paycheck and not saving enough for retirement. What's the point of increasing their misery by not splurging on anything?

Definitely understand the bottled drinks thing. I saved myself a ton of money when I changed over to bringing my own.

The thing I love is that, for all the whining about allowances, none of the guys I know are willing to go out and get a second job, nor are they willing to tell their wives to get out and get one (guys married to housewives are the ones with the lowest allowances). Both of my parents worked and if I got some shit allowance I would definitely get a second job and tell wife to fuck off when it came to that money.

Most full-time jobs in Japan don't allow you to have a side job which is stated in your employment contract and they will fire you if they find out. Besides when you're working 60+ hours a week you probably don't have a lot of time for that anyway.

There is a depressing ghetto lyricism to that. Well written. Do you actually agree with that? Probably dated, but I still believe social mobility can happen, but not for people like that.

As much of a pet peeve as anything, but yeah. ¥400 a day saved for somebody looking at a ¥561 lunch? Not inconsequential.

Plus,
IT'S JUST TAP WATER YOU SHIITEFERBRAINSES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :cry2:

PS One more on the Extra Job option. Most simply couldn't, and many aren't allowed. I used to get asked twice a year if I was working outside. It always bemused me more than anything, but all the continental Asian colleagues were and thought I was nuts for not doing it.

I've had that as well. Even got asked about it when my taxes were higher than expected - I just said I owned stocks and didn't have a tokutei koza. Even then, a lot of convenience store jobs pay cash (so you could "forget" about taxes, although I bet that's going to change with "my number")

I don't really agree or disagree with it but I understand the psychology of it.

Social mobility is possible but I don't think it has much to do with whether or not you save a couple of hundred yen extra a day on tea.

Not everyone has space to store stuff bought in bulk or an easy way to get it home. Especially not the kind of people that would benefit the most from doing so.

Many of this stuff is also available on Amazon....and we're not talking Costco-sized storage needs. The cartons of drinks, especially coffee, take up very little space.
