Young Japanese-Americans Honor Ethnic Roots

Young Japanese-Americans Honor Ethnic Roots

But Ms. Cherry, who will soon become a social work therapist, said she would like her own children to learn Japanese, go to Japanese festivals, play in Japanese sports leagues and have a Japanese first name.

"Even if they're a quarter, I want them to know that that's still part of who they are,'' she said.

For now, she will be passing on her crown to the next Nisei Week queen during this year's festival Aug. 7 to 15. Of all she learned during her reign as goodwill ambassador for Japanese-Americans, she said, visiting Japan last year was an eye-opener.

"All the girls dye their hair brown and they're obsessed with expensive jeans,'' she said. "Even in Japan, they're becoming very American.''

It should be in the bag for Iwata-san, as she was the 1st Miss Sushi & Tofu. :?

I wonder if that means she gets a gig at the restaurant for body sushi nights? 8O

Meanwhile, this photo ...

suggests that the candidates may have to serve on the Starship Enterprise.

The girl on the left in front is the prettiest.

She looks like she has some black in her.

Ahh. SHE is Iwata san.

The '41 & '49 Queens would've been tough gigs.

And the Queen of '69 would've been an interesting title to have.

That's two votes, Iwata-san.

I vote for the girl in the front, and a distant second choice of the one just to the left (camera left, her right).

BTW, apropos of nothing in particular, I used to live next to Little Tokyo, in the old loft district, my company back then even sponsored Nisei Week events, although it appears the kids "fun run" Chibi-K event no longer exists now that my company no longer exists to sponsor it.

And BTW, here's what my artist's loft across the street from Little Tokyo used to look like:

http://ceicher.homeunix.com/archives/000531.html

And now here's what it looks like today, after all the artists got kicked out and the area was gentrified:

http://www.interiordesign.net/id_article/CA382471/id?stt=001

Look at the bottom picture in the right column, with the nice wood floors. There is a long story behind this loft, the eviction of artists from Traction Avenue by Japanese real estate speculators became the plot line for the movie Robocop 3. The script was written by my neighbor and computer client, Frank Miller, the original story line was about me specifically. Someday I'll write that all up, it's a long story.

Mmmm

Postby kurohinge1 » Thu May 19, 2005 1:27 pm

* bump *

Well, there's a couple of months to go but here's the
2005 NISEI WEEK CANDIDATES:

Image

L to R (back row): Ashley Wakayama; Kimiko Rojas;
Steffanie Tamehiro; and Doreen Ogata.
L to R (front row): Kristyn Hayashi; Michelle Ito

Following intimate investigation of these girls (all for the sake of the FG website), I can reveal the following:

Ashley's hobbies include: Tahitian/Hawaiian Dancing, Tennis, Being With My Chi Sistas

Kimiko-chan has done some film & stage work

Kristyn-san says: I love Hawaii, and I wanna go to Australia and Japan
(and she loves creamy peanut butter over crunchy).

Now, I know it's early and she's a bit of a dark horse, but my money's on Doreen Ogata (back row, far right) sponsored by the East San Gabriel Valley Japanese Community Center. Co-incidentally, Iwata-san (who got the most votes from FG last year) was "from the same stable", as it were.

Gambatte Doreen-san.

The 2005 chicks all have Japanese fathers except one of them. I think the mother makes a difference for what a 'half' looks like. Probably the Japanese father could only get the big fat Amerika chick dregs - hence thier 'average' looks

And I think you're full of shit... But that's nothing new.

You might want to pick up the equivalent of "Genetics for Dummies" and have a quick read.

You're assuming that all the kids with Japanese names have a non-Japanese mother. I'd say that most of them probably have two Japanese parents.

Maths Dude wrote:Good looking people usually have good looking kids.

Sometimes, but not always. Have a look through Hollywood.

Maths Dude wrote:Guess if I have kids they gonna be fugly, just like you FGL 8)

You mean when, right? If I remember correctly you posted that your wife is pregnant.

I already have a daughter...Luckily for her she doesn't look that much like me. (And before you make the obvious comment, yes, she is mine -- certain features are identical.)

I'm sure you'll enjoy watching your little one grow as much as I do. It's not possible to understand until you have one of your own.

I wish I had seen this back when you originally posted it. I'm not entering any beauty contests so I will continue to call them fugly. That being said, if I had a few beers in me I'd fuck any of them.

My vote's in.
Steffanie Tamehiro
[definitely a cutie, at least in the picture]

2nd runner-up: Michelle Ito tied with Ashley Wakayama

And since I get no perks purely for the way I look then I'll also feel free to lament that Doreen is plain unattractive.
