Yeah, in 1983 I was taken to a Nomiya place in Saitama by students, at which they had Kangaroo sashimi. Tasted rather bland actually.

Kangaroo is great when it is cooked.. but as it is not farmed (ie controlled) I am not willing to eat it raw with all those parasites etc.

As far as I know, most Kangaroos are culled using the night sight rifle on the back of a ute through the bush... correct me if I am wrong anybody.

Agreed. I used to date a girl whose older brother went pig hunting with only a Rambo-type knife. (N.B. for non-australians - these pigs have sharp tusks and are very aggressive when provoked).

How to speak Strine

Postby GomiGirl » Tue Sep 07, 2004 10:49 pm

Strine = Australian English Slang

slab (of beer) = case of beer
ute = utility (a car with a small cab at the front and open tray at the back used on farms and as work vehicles. It is smaller than what seppo's would call a "Pick-up" but the same sort of idea)
seppo = an American citizen (from rhyming slang - septic tank - yank)
roo = a kangaroo
rooted = to be very tired
razorback = a type of wild boar found in the Australian bush
tunna = a one tonne truck (see ute above)
Hunter Valley = an area north west of Sydney famous as for wine making and coal
mexicans = people from southern states of Australia (usually Victoria) ie South of the border
cobbler = a tradesman who repairs shoes aka the shoe repair guy
not to be confused with:
cobber = chocolate covered caramel (my favorite chocolate)

A cobber is a type of lolly that can be found at the corner store and used to cost around 3c each when I was a kid. They were really expensive as jelly beans used to be 2 for 1c at the same time.

But they are similar to Fantales (yes that is the correct spelling) which are covered in paper printed with tales about your fave movie stars. A fave at the sat'dy arvo flicks.

sat'dy = Saturday
arvo = afternoon
flicks = movies
lolly = sweet or candy

Sometimes a cobber is listed in slang dictionaries as a mate or a friend.. however NOBODY ever uses this word except Paul Hogan in Crocodile Dundee.

oh and ps.. they are PRAWNS on the Barbie and not shrimps..

don't come the raw prawn with me mate!!

Potato cakes

Postby Marvin Feltcher » Wed Sep 08, 2004 12:05 am

I miss potato cakes....chocolate royals, Polly Waffles, Jaffas, cobbers (which we Victorians called mates, or did in my era at least), jelly babies, licorice all sorts, creamy soda, teeth, black cats, snags...shit, I could go on for hours.
By the way, GG, there's also other meanings for rooted. Like, "this EH is rooted," which means this old-style Holden car is buggered (not literally, it just doesn't work any more), or "I rooted her in the back of the EH," which was sort of common practice where I grew up because we didn't have love hotels.

If you have a HR, it's wide enough to root them in the front.

Other than roos, what else would sell here in Japan. Never heard a Japanese complain about a TimTam, couldn't imagine an Iced VoVo or a Monte Carlo would take off.

Vegemite Mochi anyone?

Do you think if we can find the relatives of the first guy to eat Fugu and survive, we can get them to try and eat cane toads?
Boom export.

If we cannot find a way to eat them we could sell them as golf balls.
