It looks like the introduce yourself thread is munged since the new server maybe. Just do it here I guess, a mod can correct me if wrong. Just say as little or as much as you like. My name is nikoneko, American in Japan for 12 years. Lived in Kobe for the last 6 years where we loved it, but recently moved back to my wife's (crap-ass, literally vomit inducing) hometown. Had my own business for a while but stopped it when I got a good gig telecommuting for a US company. Interests are climbing mountains, throwing knives and stabbing Pandas, using axes, and starting fires.

I added a self-introduction thread if anyone's interested. I'm sure there used to be one but can't find it.

How does everybody feel about discreet introductions of this site to a few good FGs from GP?

Since opinions on what makes for Good vary widely, I'll list a few examples: Ume, Esoteric, Brown Cow, Cucashopboy, that sort of middle range mellow groover.

I thought it would be proper to ask first........................

I've always lurked around gaijinpot w/out joining so I was surprised to see that it's closing. Was that something to do with you, Kurogane? I notice that you were banned and then the admin said the site had been hacked and that was one of the reasons they were closing the forum. BTW I am not blaming you for that.

You're a bit of a ledge on Japan forums but I didn't know you also were a member here.

As someone who joined this forum not that long ago, I find fucked gaijin a good place to read and post. People don't tend to be petty here if they disagree with you and they are fairly laid back. I'd love to join a meetup in Tokyo but have not been able to yet - I live too far.

I've heard of Gaijin forums a lot around Japanese internet circles. What was so 'bad' about it?
From what my irl friends describe it ,it sounds like a cesspool of masochists who think they're all the shit since they're so cultured and people who go there so actual advice are blown to pieces by an army of internet weaboos.

Honorable discharge so its all good in my case. I still train military personnel so I suppose you could say I have a pretty good working relationship with them, but no official affiliation.

Looks like some people have managed to setup an archive of the forum content at http://gaijinnot.com/.
This is actually really good. While there were a lot of issues with trolls in the community, there was also a lot of very useful information and anecdotes buried among the noise about things like visas, PR, and buying/renting property.
I myself did not know that gaijinnot was in the works and spent some time last night saving some threads about PR for future reference since I was going to be applying some time down the road.
Here's hoping whoever put up gaijinnot will keep it up. I can see the forum not picking up momentum causing the guy to get discouraged and take it back down again.

That is pretty rich coming from the Reddit crowd, though I count it as a backhanded compliment. Are they not fairly well known as the go to site for manga-dweebs and Japan, My Cultural Homeland types? My few forays there ended with retching disgust at the sheer numptyness of the place. There was also a fair bit of comment about the threat of an impending GP-fugee flood into their comfy haven, which was deliciously conceited.

Anyways, Wangta,

Hey. Even my ego would cringe at the claim that I had anything to do with the shutdown. I was never privy to any of the goings on there, I just posted a lot. Word on the unterwebz suggest I was banned as a final FU when the word went out to insiders that the forums were closing for good. One does hope they did it with a smile and a laugh rather than any really mean spirit, but pretty good poetic justice nonetheless, as quite a few have pointed out.

FG is also a long running community with it's own ecosphere, unwritten rules and politics so rather than just picking up where you left off from GP, hang out for a while and join the FG community in the same spirit as you find here. Mostly we are a friendly bunch but like most communities, we like things the way they are.

How absolutely fucked up is that writer Chris Johnson or whatever his name is from goya mag.

Fucked gaijin is a forum where adults with adult humour post but the humour is usually good natured and the old hands are fine. Even Samurai Jerk gets served for his handle and tho I've had a few disagreements with him since I've joined, in no way do he or the others mentioned in that article deserve to be called trolls and all the other bullshit being thrown around by the wimp who wrote the article.

Fucked gaijin and letsjapan org are about the only 2 gaijin in Japan sites worth posting on (apologies if gaijingang turns out well). I am not a member of letsjapan but it seems to have a similar feeling to here w/out the more extreme humour. Chris, if you're reading this - maybe you need to take a long break in your home country. Thank you for giving people like me who are not in the know an indication of Greiji's identity but to call him and others 'bullies' and 'trolls' indicates you lost touch with reality a long time ago.

Is Chris the whinger who ended up in Narita's 'infamous underground gaijin gulag' of his overheated imagination because he was stupid enough to live here on a tourist visa and then keep going out of Japan and coming back? If he is the one, then I'd say Japan is being too soft on him.
