Might well be. In a way let's hope so.

Five minutes or more to evacuate. Some passengers blocked the aisle as they took their hand carry luggage from the overhead bins. If those passengers can be identified, IMO they need to be put back onto a burning plane….

I think you're being a bit harsh, after all, their carry on luggage might have had their smartphones in them.  I suggest a thorough public flogging with yak piss soaked pool noodles followed by a 4 hour encounter group safety lecture on why you only chew gum around others when you have enough for everybody.

But seriously, if they can be identitifed they should be shamed. And beaten.

Oh well - if that is the case - smart phones, or even their chargers would seem to be a legitimate excuse for possibly causing the fiery deaths of those passengers who were in the back of the plane. My bad....

Yeah, I was shocked at your sense of priorities.......... ;)

The story is on the Webz at ABC and such, so let's hope they actually raise the issue of stupidity w/o turning it into a Youtube Feckfest where the stupids get treated like normal, functioning humans. Out of curiosity, anybody know if they evacuate First and Business passengers first? That would be kind of funny if they do.

The burning issue is not the behavior of the passengers! People will be people. It's up to aircraft designers to design safety into their products.

The burning issue is the engine fault and the design of the overhead lockers - Perhaps they should lock during takeoff and landing.

Yes of course First & Business get off first. On my flight - they moved all of Economy toward the back, and had First (an upper deck), come down and take the seats closest to the doors. Actually I was recruited as a `kicker` - to ensure that people jumped, or if they hesitated more than a hundredth of a second, to give them a push out the door. Everyone needed that push, including me - by the flight crew who jumped last.

Of course this was a planned evacuation, since he plane was limping for a couple of hours before finally making it back and it was strongly suspected that an evacuation would be necessary. On the Las Vegas flight, they may have had one or two lowlifes from cattle class jump the queue and undeservedly get off before the very last of the First and Business upper-crusters. If they can be identified... well, back on for re-education of course.

BTW - I do like the idea of automated locks on the hand carry luggage compartments ... maybe even Taser strength shockers.

Nice bit of fantasy about first and business class getting priority exit in an emergency. There there are at least 4 more emergency exits toward the back including two at the very back. Actually, in a crash landing you are almost always better off at the back of the plane rather than up front. If first and business were really to be favoured they would be moved next to the exits at the very back and everyone else moved up.

No fantasy. Not sure why rear exists were not used on my flight (747), nor this Las Vegas (777) flight.

EDIT: I just looked at the 777 photos - and the rear chutes were used on that one. Maybe they were also used on my 747 - but since I went out of a front exit I didn`t see that. So you may be correct. If so, that surely is a service miss from my perspective. :-D

Fuuuuuuuuuu, what did the airline end up doing for you to make it right? Had something similar happen a few years ago when a plane came in late (attempting to wait out a typhoon....we landed in it  ) Trains, buses, nothing would get us home and the airline was just like "not our problem, we got you here, didn't we?" so I ended up paying a buddy to drive out that late at night and pick us up. (the only other option was taxi but the line was a mile long with hardly any taxis showing up...)

If I were on this plane sitting in the back and the crew said to go up to the front to get out I would have punched them out then gone out the back - no way I'd walk through the wing area.

Great question! They did FA. Not a g#(&$)=&g. Pissed me off too, naturally. But they were the only carrier that would get me where I needed to go, and I had a quadrillion points/miles so always flew first, even when on points. What to do?

We didn`t get any information that night regarding the next day flight, and when we were finally bussed to a nearby hotel, they were insisting on two people to a room - which would have been OK if it was to be a cutie. But alas. So I grabbed a taxi home and figured out the flights the next day.

Suit nearly ruined, shoes a loss, and I believe all we got was a coupon for use of the executive lounge (which I already had access to). Passengers not as invested as I was, would have stopped flying the airline.

There is the question of which door to use… The obvious answer is the one that is nearest – but that wouldn`t necessarily be correct. The right door to use would be the one that is already open, has a chute deployed, and has no fire near it. On my flight, he left outer engine was ablaze –and so was fuel on the ground to the rear which probably spilled on landing and before the engine flared up, so left middle door was not used, and I assume left rear too. I was a kicker for the middle right door.

Probably not.

Imagine that. You lived through a plane fire, an RTO and the panic of an evacuation, and you now find yourself standing around for 1 hour, 2 hours with your family, no coat, no shoes and you are now at the mercy of the TSA, INS and airline waiting in line for food/hotel/expenses vouchers while left your passports, phone, cash, cards, coat, shoes, and everything else which would be really fucking useful right now on the plane which is on fire.

I'm not surprised people take their handluggage with them, I'd probably do the same thing. People know when all is said and done they have to fend for themselves, the authorities these days will only do the absolute minimum required to make people not die. If that means you have to sit in immigration until the next flight out because you have no passport on you it's absolutely no concern of them.

British Airways passengers came in for harsh criticism when they were pictured grasping their hand luggage as they evacuated an enflamed plane in Las Vegas. Was that fair?

They did it. I win.

Wage Slave,
Yes, fully agreed, and I would use any keys or pointed sticks in my pocket to blind and hopefully cripple angry plebs like Tsuru and inflames. Both of whom I adore, btw. Nobody matters at all, but people that think they do get instant Darwin Awards, and people that think their fag bags matter desrve to get hunted down and wheelchaired. But I do agree in (childish) principle that the airlines should get their shiite together.

BTW, WTF doesn't ALWAYS carry their wallet and passport like Salty noted? And yes, I get that these fat fucks had chosen to go to Las Vegas, which does suggest an IQ lottery loss.

Passport, shutdown phone and other stuff always travel in ziplock bags in cargo pants pocket...
Plus titanium engraved ring for corpse ID... (*)
Carry on is always under my seat, never in overhead trays. Japs are worse than chinks as far as overhead bins hoarding goes.

From your link:

Not only does that use of energy take up precious clean air, it prohibits others from evacuating quickly, says Mr Weiss, and air toxicity and smoke inhalation is what kills most people in fires.
People take flying for granted and assume nothing will happen to them, and that is dangerous, he adds.

Yea, it's almost as if someone with a calculator and numbers calling them statistics told people that he could see the future based on previous barely related happenstances.

Allowing that I am simply not man enough to follow suit, do you find you tend to suck your teeth and wear your pants up above your navel with your shirt tucked tightly in when adorned with your fanny bag? BTW, best unwitting bad North Americanism ever, in MYHOMO. TOATS!!!!!!!!!! I just have a little A5/B5 document sized organiser pouch for it all, but it could fit in the back of my waistband as needed.
