Ok I had to look up the European Union Times to see what it was about. Conspiracy websites not exactly being my forte.

Just out of interest where did you look it up? Is there a quick and easy reference work to consult for sites? In this case a quick skim plus the fact the article referred to The Alex Jones News show in approving tones was sufficient to indicate it's nature.

As for Snopes - My impression is that it is a pretty good source. It's not perfect of course and I am sure there are examples of mistakes made. However, on the whole it strikes me as a worthy and reasonable effort to get at the facts. The only specific criticism I have seen is that it is insufficiently sympathetic to right wing views and alternative facts which automatically means it is extremely left wing. The possibility that it isn't particularity sympathetic to right wing views and prejudices because it is (more or less) unbiased is never considered. I always felt the same about Wikipedia in spite of the muttering (in the past mostly) from the right wing. It's generally pretty good and on many topics, very good.

I am no virologist so I welcome informed correction.

That story is very different from "The virus was engineered in a lab in the US or Canada, a Chinese researcher stole it and took it to the less secure Wuhan lab where in an accident happened."

Now it is being said that perhaps bats were being studied in the Wuhan L2 lab and the virus was isolated from one of the bats. As a result of bungling researchers or an accident one person caught the virus and then s/he infected others possibly by visiting the market. Might be true but what about Russell's question above. In that case, why didn't people in Yunan catch it first?

There is some strong evidence that the virus needed to become a new variant with more effective spikes to become as dangerous as it is to humans. This either happened in an intermediary animal eg a pangolin or happened in humans as they passed the virus around for an extended period. If it is the latter, then the same question. Why in Wuhan? Why didn't it happen where the bats are from?

1. The Chinese conduct scientific espionage on a massive scale. From the information we have, it does not appear to be a case of that. So scratch that idea.
2. As for Yunan, it's only speculation. I don't know if bats there often come into contact with pangolins. I don't know if the viral load of any particular bat makes said bat all that infectious or not. I suppose that if someone there cooked a bat or pangolin it would kill any pathogens. Maybe a variant is circulating there that is less harmful and symptomatic. I wonder that in Wuhan where they would be cultivating virus for research a greater amount of virus concentrated in a vial might be more infectious were it handled carelessly. They have have been trying to engineer the virus, they may not have. If the Americans or other governments have the answers they're not saying, at least not yet.

We do not know whether that market in Wuhan produced this virus. We do know that among the early cases there were a lot of stallholders, market workers and market regulars. One thing is for sure. Keeping a variety of animals together in close contact either to farm them or to market them is a very dangerous thing to do. This has been known for a long time and is not taken anywhere near seriously enough in China. Keeping wild animals which have never been vaccinated or monitored or treated for disease in close contact with a variety of other animals is asking for trouble. That is not controversial and it was the case in Wuhan as it was the case all over China. And it is not just China. Either the WHO or Donald Trump (I wonder who has the best chance) is going to have to try an persuade China and other countries to just stop doing it.

Whale oil is a cheap and plentiful alternative. We only stopped using it because an even cheaper alternative was discovered underground.
