Keep up the good work, Nippon..
I bet you some dumb ass on the last day of the games will win a shitty bronze for Nippon and ruin this great achievement of medal-less streak.

AO, you have to go to furl's page through the link and look in the back post pages. It's there, I just had a quick look to see and since I wanted to be sure it was the right one I watched it 37 times!

Olympics: Arakawa 3rd, Suguri 4th after short program
TURIN, Italy, Feb. 21 KYODO

Shizuka Arakawa got off to a strong start in the hunt for a podium spot Tuesday after finishing third in the women's short program, while fellow Japanese figure skater Fumie Suguri follows in fourth going into the free skate.
Arakawa put on a technically near-flawless performance and earned 66.02 points from the judges, 0.71 adrift of American Sasha Cohen and 0.68 behind Russian world champion Irina Slutskaya.

NHK sucks!!

Postby canman » Wed Feb 22, 2006 8:47 am

I can't understand NHK. They showed the hockey game last night between THe Swiss and Italy in prime time. THe Canada vs. Czech game was on much later. So is NHK going to replay that game that many people coulnd't watch because of its late hour. No they will replay the game many people could have watched. Not that I have anything against the Swiss or Italian teams, but the Canada Czech have much bigger playoff and medal implications. Also I may be wrong, but did they ever broadcast the women't gold medal hockey game. I kept watching for it, but coulnd't find it.
But rest assured we will get to see about 40 hours of ladies figure skating, and the three divas over and over and over again ad naseum.

I'm a bit disappointed that you didn't get a good plumbing shot of Arakawa since she appeared to be wearing a much skimpier costume.:)

I did find an interesting analysis of the judging from Scientfic American which essentially infers that any of the three leaders could have won the short program based on random results of the judges.

Yes I posted about this on another thread -- it really sucks what NHK has done, shell out money to get exclusive then shut down the coverage. Why not let one of the SkyPerfect channels run 24-hour coverage, I mean they have a channel devoted to dogs only, and several for golf but not one out of the 300 has Olympic coverage. Tonight it's Canada/Russia; USA/Finland; Czech/Slovakia and Sweden/Suisse -- three of these should be excellent games, all are eliminations. But NHK is showing none of them. I'm pissed at the terrible coverage I hope one of those annoying NHK collection bastards rings my bell today so I can yell at him.

For those that complain about Olympic coverage in Japan, it is really not that much better here in the U.S.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/olympics/torino/2006-02-16-olympic-tv-viewing_x.htm

The only event I've seen on TV without the U.S. team competing was hockey and I'm not a big hockey fan.

I wanted to see Michele Kwan compete, but she had an injury and couldn't compete.

Tough about hockey, but the teams were pretty good across the board this time and all and all, there was some pretty good hockey played.

However, it ain't that bad, you're having a good Olympics. Look at the medal count. Also, you just snuffed the US in curling for more bragging rights. It ain't so horrible yet, Dimwit!

Just watch tonight, this is Nippon's last stand. If one of the girls doesn't come through in the long program, it's time for mass stomach slashing and in honor of the occasion, I will be quaffing a bunch of suds.

Yeah it is too bad the figure skating is on at 5:00 in the morning, otherwise I would be out at the local lending my shoulder for a sympathetic cry on.

On the whole these Olympics have given me a wonderful excuse for late night weekday carousing.

I think the agony of experiencing Japan's defeat locally may not be as fresh in your memory as mine. American coverage is a million times better. It's deplorable in Japan. In Japan the coverage is far more repetitive, far more fragmented and the commentary is much worse. I mean it's like a girl from Morning Musume saying Kawaii or Kowai or what the fuck ever. Watching any sports on TV in Japan is without fail depressing. They can ruin anything. And with the Olympics you cannot buy good coverage. It is NOT offered.

Man, I was pissed that the US got eliminated last night. Well, will have to cheer for Canada.
Then I wake up this morningand find out Canada was eliminated too !!!!

This sucks, but it is exactly what the NHL owners wanted. They don't want to release their players for loss of $$$ and possible injuries (Hasek for example). Anything that will not promote N. American hockey, ie. good performances will benefit the owners. I expect the NHL owners will not release players for the next Olympics.

I wanted Canada to win (the hockey gold), but am glad to see that criminal Bertuzzi sent home with nuthin'! He is the antithesis of the spirit of the Olympic Games. Hope things work out well for Gretz, though...

That most Canadians will enjoy the fact that they had the most successful winter games in history, even if we didn't win the gold in hockey. It would be a shame to disrespect all the other competitors, just because we ran into a scoring drought. Which does seem a little weird. I thought the problem was going to be defence for Canada. And the worst thing of all, is that the Ottawa Senators have lost Dominic Hasek, for god knows how long. That is the biggest disappointment for me. They were legitimate Cup contenteders, but not without the Dominator.

I read earlier on Drudge that NBC is having piss poor ratings for this Olympics as well. I don't blame them. The US team kicks ass in the summer games--the track and field just dominates everyone else-- but no one really gives a shit about the winter games.

Postby canman » Thu Feb 23, 2006 5:42 pm

IT might be the time difference. With the internet you can now find out immediately who won etc, so if the team or athlete you were supporting didn't do well, you don't watch. Whereas before you had no choice. People now know the results and are choosing to watching something else like American Idol, where they don't already know the outcome. I bet that the Vancouver Olympics will get a much better ratings since its in the American time zones.

Yeah you might be right actually.
I don't think the last Olympics did too bad because it was in Salt Lake City.

But besides that, this year's ski team is a disaster and they overhyped a lot of athletes (Bode Miller for an example) and look at what happened.

Nippon Bonzai (bonsai?)

Postby Greji » Fri Feb 24, 2006 6:59 am

Arakawa pulls Japan's fat out of the fire and wins the first of their many medals in Torino (one) with a Gold Medal in figure skating. According to the announcer, now that they have broken the ice, they will do really well this Olympics! Sounds like a good reason to go to the pub for a pint tonight!
