Man severs own head after driving off with neck tied to tree
Mainichi Interactive, July 13, 2007
NAGOYA -- The head of a man was found near a car at a parking lot on Thursday morning after it was apparently severed when he tied a rope to a tree and secured it around his neck before driving off, police said.

A passerby found the head near the vehicle in the parking lot of a golf course in Nagoya's Tenpaku-ku at about 7 a.m. and alerted police.

Officers suspect that the man's head was severed when he accelerated the car. The head apparently flew out the back of the car, which was open.

Police believe that he was a 56-year-old resident of Nagoya. A suicide note was found inside the car.

Japan Times: Poll finds misconceptions about suicide
Half of the public mistakenly believes that individuals who refer to the possibility of committing suicide rarely take their own lives, according to a Cabinet Office survey. The poll also found that 46 percent of the respondents hold the erroneous notion that people who kill themselves do so suddenly, without exhibiting any warning signs. "Many show signs before committing suicide" despite the prevailing misconception, said a Cabinet Office official in charge of countering suicide. "It is necessary to organize a public information campaign to help people to develop correct notions."

Elderly people were more likely to believe people kill themselves without any warning, with 57.9 percent of the respondents in their 70s or older giving this answer, compared with 39.6 percent of the respondents in their 20s. Slightly more than 66 percent of all respondents were aware that more than 30,000 Japanese have committed suicide each year since 1998, and that the number is four to five times higher than that of people killed in road accidents. Among employers who took the survey, 45.8 percent said they monitor their workers' conditions at periodic health checkups as a countermeasure against suicide, and 19.4 percent said their workplaces provide counseling services. The poll, conducted in May, received valid responses from 1,728 people aged 20 or older.

You gotta be Ralphing me! How do J-employers alledgedly do this admirabe feat? When some dude (normally dudes) has the big one and falls over at a point anywhere from his front door to the ofice, in the office, or on the return trip to his front door, the companies and government then get concderned and dash out a series of nicely worded letters about being careful of people working excessively hard and overtime, etc. Then it's back to the grindstone with the boss looking down his nose at anyone who takes this no overtime BS seriously. Most of these programs do not go beyond the reporting of so-called efforts of this type (in a favorable light) to the Ministry and are provided as the appropriate fodder for survey takers. Die as you please, just not during office hours. Suicides don't even rate that attention.

Last time we had a suicide within our work enviorment, it was more of the "oh, so young" and exclaimations that he was "just taking sekinin". I have no idea what he was taking the sekinin for in that instance. We had not major scandals, or missing funds, but everyone in the office seemed very happy and well satisfied that this was a good explanation for why the unfortunate event occurred.

A new wrinkle...
2 women gas themselves in car in apparent suicide pact
Mainichi
KUMAGAYA, Saitama -- Two women have gassed themselves in a car in an apparent suicide pact, police said.

The two have been identified as 21- and 22-year-old women from Namegawa, Saitama Prefecture, who were elementary school classmates.

At about 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, an angler found two women collapsed in a car parked near the bank of the Arakawa River in the Kawara-Aketo district of Kumagaya, and alerted police. Officers pronounced them dead at the scene.

Investigators discovered two empty bottles that contained a bathwater additive and detergent, leading them to suspect that the two mixed the two liquids to generate toxic hydrogen sulfide gas. A note saying, "I got sick and tired of thinking about my future," was found in the vehicle.

Prefectural police said a suicide Website carried a story about how to general toxic gas to commit suicide.

Man injured after woman falls on him from building and dies
Mainichi
A man was seriously injured after a woman fell on top of him from a high-rise condominium complex in Tokyo, police said. The woman later died.

Police are probing into whether the woman leaped from the structure in a suicide bid or accidentally fell.

A person walking on a street in Tokyo's Minato-ku alerted police at around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, saying, "I heard a loud thump, and when I turned around, there were people lying on the ground."

Investigators suspect that the woman, appearing to be in her 30s or 40s, fell from an 11-story condominium complex onto a 47-year-old man who was walking on the street.

The woman was rushed to hospital but died shortly afterwards from massive internal injuries. The man suffered head injuries that will take about one month to heal.

Man left unconscious after suicide attempt at Ginza Station
Mainichi
A man remains unconscious after being hit by a subway train at Ginza Station in downtown Tokyo during the morning rush hour on Friday, police said, adding that it appears to be a case of attempted suicide.

At about 8 a.m., a 23-year-old office worker was hit by a six-carriage train bound for Ogikubo from Ikebukuro at Ginza Station on the Marunouchi Subway Line, local police said. He remains unconscious and in critical condition.

Investigators suspect that the man, a resident of Chiba Prefecture, jumped in front of the train from the platform.

Services on the line were suspended for about 20 minutes following the accident, inconveniencing about 62,000 commuters, the subway operator said.

Sure, but if I was one of the passengers stuck on a packed Tokyo subway train for an extra 20 minutes because some wanker jumped....I'd be pissed.

Woman jumps to death from Tokyo building, lands on pedestrian
Mainichi
A woman died and a man was knocked unconscious, apparently after the woman leaped from the roof of a department store in Tokyo and landed on the man, police said Tuesday.

Police said a passerby found the man and woman collapsed and bleeding on the road in front of the Ikebukuro Parco department store in Tokyo's Toshima-ku at about 1 p.m. on Tuesday, and alerted police.

The woman was confirmed dead soon afterwards. The man remains unconscious in serious condition.

Ikebukuro Police Station officials said the woman's shoes were found on the roof of the Parco building, leading them to suspect that she had jumped to her death and landed on the man. It is common in Japan for people to remove their shoes before committing suicide.

TOKYO - Japan's employers should provide mental health services to workers suffering from depression and other illnesses, the government said Friday after reporting that more than 30,000 people killed themselves last year.

In its first annual report on suicide and suicide prevention measures, the Cabinet Office said 32,155 people killed themselves in 2006, the 9th straight year the figure has exceeded 30,000.

The total number of suicides represents a drop of 397 from the previous year, the government said. Still, Japan's suicide rate ranks 9th highest in the world, the government added, citing World Health Organization data. Lithuania had the highest rate, followed by Belarus and Russia, while the U.S. ranked 43.

I looked at the the WHO site and noticed the data is reported from various conuntries in "last available" years. So some go back to '76, '82, etc. while some countries have more recent data fro the '90s and '00. The article makes it out to be more new than what the WHO site shows it really to be.

That being said, it does look like the certain areas/ethnic regions suffer worse. I wonder if that is more genetic than environmental/social?
Also, the latin countries seem to be a lot lower in general. Underreporting due to Church views on suicide?

Nah.. The guilt programming by the Catholic church; You can do anything you want, as long as you go to confession. But if you kill yourself, you're going to burn in hell forever.. No time to confess!

Now if you were to slowly bleed yourself to death, crawl to church, confess to the Father and he forgives you.. I guess that would be cool with the Big Guy. ;)

What if you jump off a building and confess to the Father through a bullhorn as you are free-falling? I don't relish the concept of cutting myself and messing up the white carpet in the living room. Y'gotta give me some options, even though I'm not Catholic, but I figure that I should at least apologize to everyone, just in case I was wrong about my decision regarding a diety (dieties).

I think that most Catholic influenced cultures view suicide as a major sin...it is not forgivable by a priest...only God. Anecdotally, I have heard that many suicides in Central and South America are not officially determined to be suicides by officials in an attempt to curtail any stigma the remaining family may have to endure.
