You know what they say GG, beauty and the beholder's eye and all that.

She's not ugly per se. But she is odd looking. She's learned how to wear make-up quite well.

On the ice, she's beautiful. But she really is an odd looking lady. I think it's the largish wide nose and VERY thin but wide lips combined that gives me that impression.

I guess NHK will devote the whole news hour to Arakawa. I'm glad that there is no other important news going on in the world. How many do we have to watch this. So her coach is Russian. I noticed NHK tried to cut him out of alot of the pictures.

Actually, I think she has a one of the 'basic' Japanese faces.. Aren't there like 10 different faces that all Japanese have as a base? I think I read that somewhere.. Maybe it was a Marvin article.

I think she has a pretty regular look.. She didn't seem beautiful to me until I saw her glowing smile after winning. Elation has a way of bringing out beauty.. he, he..

No suprise there Canman. Japanese would hate to admit that it took a Russian coach to get Japan it's first gold medal in figure skating.
And I'm sure her coach "hit it" at some point.

You're right about elation bringing out beauty. When she lets herself smile, she is quite pleasant to look at.

And the more I look at the picture I posted, the more normal she begins to look. I guess I've been away from Japan long enough that Japanese faces have begun to look foreign again to me perhaps.

Nah, she probably has a pretty good level of self-confidence, being an Olympic gold medal winner and all, and doesn’t need a flabby 50 year old desk jockey telling her how to improve her looks with teeth whiteners and silicon implants and whatever else you think she should have to turn her into Nicole Simpson. Just a thought.
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

I think she's bizarre looking, too. Masami took one look at her and said she looks Chinese. (which is maybe why someone posted they see girls who look like her in Yokohama).

I can see Mikiti's popularity slipping and all the ad endorsements going to Arakawa already. Did anyone get the chance to see those canned coffee with the figure skaters?

Slalom agony for Japan
The Courier-Mail: [26feb06]
THERE was heartbreak for the sizeable number of Japan fans at the men's Winter Olympic Games slalom today (AEDT).
Their hero, Kentaro Minagawa, missed out on a bronze medal by just three-hundredths of a second...more...

Ice queen Arakawa sparks doughnut craze

Sun-Sentinel, February 26 2006
[floatr]Image[/floatr]
They are eating golden doughnuts back home in honor of Japan's only medalist at these Olympics, Shizuka Arakawa.
Arakawa, 24, won the glamour event of the games, women's figure skating, on Thursday night, and she was not only awarded with a gold medal, but with the sweet tribute from Doughnut Plant NYC in Japan. The medal-shaped doughnuts are sprinkled with gold leaf....more...[/INDENT]

Did anybody hear

Postby canman » Sun Feb 26, 2006 9:38 pm

My wife just told me she read about a couple of figure skaters who during their performance fell and then while on the ice started to argue about who was at fault and they quit! I would love to see that. I hope its not a untrue story, that would be just to good. I'm not sure if it was ice dancing or pairs. I did a google but couldn't find anything.

NHK won't show it but even Jay Leno was making jokes about that couple.

REUTERS Fri Feb 24, 2006 3:38 PM GMT

Spills were also on the agenda in what is usually considered skating's least dangerous event -- ice dancing.

Early pace setters Barbara Fusar Poli and Maurizio Margaglio were one of four medal contenders who crashed to the ice during the original dance.

In their last lift, Fusar Poli failed to hold her position, Margaglio lost his balance and both tumbled in a tangled heap on the ice.

Although their fall was not that bad, the drama that followed was pure theatre.

When the Italians stood back up, they squared off.

Hand on hips, the duo exchanged icy glares for what seemed an eternity while the audience watched the silent drama in hushed amazement.

Then just as suddenly, Fusar Poli and Margaglio joined hands, bowed to the judges with fixed smiles before storming off the ice.

The mistake plunged them from first to seventh and produced one of the most memorable moments of these Winter Olympics.

Olympics: Arakawa's gold saves Japan, but dismal result remains
REUTERS
.....Arakawa was just one of 112 athletes sent to Turin as part of Japan's 238-member delegation -- its largest ever at an overseas Winter Games. Despite her heroics, the fact remains Japan still had its worst Winter Olympics since winning just one bronze at the 1988 Calgary Games.
And it barely escaped coming home empty-handed for the first time since the 1976 Innsbruck Olympics.
In marked contrast, South Korea and China both claimed 11 medals -- including six golds for South Korea in short track speed skating -- for their biggest hauls at a Winter Olympics....more...

From Taro's link:

"Chizuka said the JOC is already moving ahead with a plan to build a national training complex for winter sports athletes."

Look for another unused-facilities-builiding goldrush for the construction companies, ala the World Cup. Nagano has plenty of training infrastructure that's languishing unused.

So the whole team gets blasted because they weren't able to get any medals. What ever happened to just participating. There is a good article on ESPN's site about the competition and how people keep talking about American Idol getting better ratings than the Olympics, but for the most part people wanted to see the competition. Sure if your countries memeber won a medal its great. But just taking part I think is a real accomplishement.
