So I just went to submit the renewal for my passport, required a postal money order for a whopping $110USD. Should have been done yesterday but I the grumpy jiji at the counter refused to accept my mainanbaa without visually seeing the card. (never needed to show my SSN in the US) Had a picture of it stored in my phone.....not good enough for him. The woman who handled it all today didn't ask to see the card, just accepted what I wrote....

Just what we need, more cards to carry around.

No, the paper one. Once it goes into full scale use, gonna be fucking annoying to carry that shit around.

Before you have kittens over this, my understanding was that it was shown once per financial institution, and once your my their his her our number had been linked to your account at that bank, it did not need to be displayed again. Is this your second international transaction at that bank?

Worse...the post office, no record. It will likely be needed every time. Avoided registering it to my bank accounts thus far though.

OK, then you will probably be asked for each foreign transaction in that case.

By the way, and I think it might be upthread in this thread, you can't register/link the number to your bank accounts in advance, until there is a transaction which triggers the bank requiring to link your number. I was trying to link the number to avoid future hassles, since it was a 250 Km round trip to the nearest branch for one of my bank accounts (fuck you Miss Bitchy!), but the banks were unable to do it, quite possibly because they have a legal duty not to collect the information until such time as they must collect the information.

As a work around in your case, if you tell them that you do not have a My Number, their legal obligation to collect the number does not exist, but they still process the transaction. I don't expect the postal clerk to actually be aware of that nuance, and I am not responsible for any repercussions from anyone lying about the non-existence of a My Number (because this is basically claiming that you are not on the juminhyou and do not have a registered residence), but it just goes to show how half-arsed the system is.

They won't make up a international money order for you without proof of residence...or so they said. (and the embassy info does warn about this, though it lacks the "my number needed" memo) I just hope my new passport arrives quickly...any kind of emergency and I'm fucked. 3-4 weeks to process while the locals get theirs in less than a week in most cases.
