Nor the american way it seems.

Step 1 be the lowest bidder
Step 2 cost overrun
Step 3-8 costs overruns
Step 9 profit !

The F22 and F35 make the Osprey program look like a textbook run...

I'm buying what you're sellin' in general but not with the specific gear I'm referring to. It was a really lame process to begin with but what it all came down to was any product deemed acceptable at the lowest bid. If you didn't meet the delivery date, you would be fined.

Jihadi John identified?

The "Jihadi John" masked fighter who fronted Islamic State beheading videos is Mohammed Emwazi, a Kuwaiti-born Briton from a prosperous family who grew up in London and graduated with a computer programming degree, according to the Washington Post.

In videos released by Islamic State (IS), the black-clad militant brandishing a knife and speaking with an English accent appears to have decapitated hostages including Americans, Britons and Syrians.

The Washington Post said Emwazi, who used the videos to threaten the West and taunt leaders such as President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron, was believed to have travelled to Syria around 2012 and to have later joined IS.

"His real name, according to friends and others familiar with his case, is Mohammed Emwazi, a Briton from a well-to-do family who grew up in West London and graduated from college with a degree in computer programming," the Post said.

I know killing people is worse but this really makes me sick.

ISIS Destroys Second Largest Museum in Iraq

A few days after burning the Mosul Public Library, ISIS posted a video showing the destruction of Mosul museum, the second largest in Iraq and rich artifacts from thousands of years of Iraq history.

In the video released on Thursday, ISIS militants use sledge hammers to destroy the museum statues one by one. An Arab ISIS leader gives a short speech justifying the destruction of priceless historic statues by saying they were idols for gods that were worshiped in contradiction of worshiping one god: Allah. Some militants carried electric drills. In the end, the pride of Assyrian civilization, a gigantic winged bull that stood for thousands of years as part of the ancient Nineveh wall is destroyed too.

Sadly, this is a good point. The British Museum is no doubt breathing a little easier as well.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Agree. The "reason" they give is bullshit, they have run out of high profile foreigners to kill so they trash the library and museum to get themselves in the news again.

They say you can tell a country's human rights record from its zoos, the better the zoo, the better the its treatment of its citizens. I think you can tell how much a country values its future by how much it respects its past, when you stand in from of an ancient object you really appreciate the efforts of those that came before so you could stand here today and you understand the obligation to work for a better tomorrow.

I am surprised there was anything left, following the invasion of Iraq a lot of stuff was looted and sold to foreign collectors. Guess we can be glad for the illegal trade in antiquities.

So where do the people here who have an issue with Islam stand on this?
Numazu Shinkin Bank, based in Numazu, rejected on Feb. 24 a request from Rikijiro Saito, a 66-year-old resident of Gotenba, Shizuoka Prefecture, to open an account in the name of his Japan-Islamic region friendship association.

In turning down his request, an official of the bank said the institution cannot open an account for an organization that carries the name Islam, Saito said.

Masanori Naito, a professor of Islamic and Middle East studies at Doshisha University’s graduate school, said that the bank’s refusal symbolizes people’s lack of awareness of Islam in Japan.

“The bank’s refusal was based on a typical misnomer among Japanese to simply connect anything Islamic with the Islamic State, and that is very offensive to Muslims,” Naito said.

Yeah, whatever.

While Naito is accusing the Japanese of associating anything Islamic with the Islamic State, he goes on to put all muslims in one group, which is a bit of a logic fail. And guess what, they are all offended. How does he know there aren't muslims who are not offended, after all, Islam forbids usury, so really Saito shouldn't be using a non Islamic bank. Indeed, some muslims may be offended by the opening of an account using the word "Islam" in a non Islamic bank.

So while I am all for people trying to find ways to build bridges between rational people, the people building those bridges need to be a little smarter. Falling back on the old "it's offensive" line kind of puts them in the "offended muslims, gee, what a novelty" category.

The risk management director at the bank’s head office said it decided to reject Saito’s request because it could not rule out the possibility that money in the account could be transferred to terrorist groups.

“We made the decision by comprehensively taking into account various factors including that we could not rule out suspicions that money in the account might be transferred to Islamic groups that deviate from the religion’s teachings,” said the director.

Damage control PR, over reaction or a legitimate concern? Banks are pretty uptight about money laundering as we all know. Call me an old cynic, but just because it has a cuddly name that doesn't mean the well meaning members wouldn't get taken for a ride by some less than honest people. We all know how naive the Japanese can be, maybe the bank spotted a rube.

Considering recent events it is understandable that people are pushing back, the bank is within their prerogative as a business to refuse to give a service. Might not sit comfortably, might not be directly constructive, but on the other hand it does demonstrate that there are far reaching reactions to the actions of a few, which in itself may conversely have a constructive effect in the long run. Checks and balances.

*  *  *

I wonder just how far it is going to go.

I think this more or less guarantees it won't go much further

Those monuments had stood the entire length of Islamic history till these angry children arrived. They have just demonstrated they have no respect for the decisions of their predecessors, human life, or human history, and in doing such have consigned themselves to the dustbin of history.

Japanese tourism site hit by pro-IS hackers

A Japanese tourism agency said Wednesday its website was hijacked by hackers who displayed a message purportedly from the Islamic State (IS) group, less than two months after the group claimed to have beheaded two Japanese hostages.

The hack follows a series of similar attacks on websites including a community futsal team and a Tokyo camera shop, public broadcaster NHK reported.

The Nishinomiya Tourism Association, near the major city of Osaka, said its home page started displaying what appeared to be a black-and-white IS logo late Sunday evening.

“Hacked by Islamic State (ISIS). We are everywhere ;),” a message read in English alongside the logo.

They are not all that dumb. Nishinomiya has so many luxury neighbourhoods and quite a lot of foreigners. This will certainly get noticed...

Given today's reporting standards:

And the IQ of the locals, I'm betting that this is also an Isis flag:
