Actualy love hina is quite a good show. (I have watched almost every episode)

2) Love Hina: I'm not even going to mention the unspeakable, disgusting, pedophilic, pornograhpic events which transpire during this show, but suffice it to say, groups of young men on Love Hina-fueled rampages are raping children at a level unheard of since the 60s.

Actualy most of the charactors are over 16 and the story is so close to the actualities of a 16yos life in Japan. The only underage kiss was between shinobu and su (karolla) and it was done as a friend, they are 2 girls.

At first, when I read this thread, I was offended. I needed to go check it out myself.
The story in itself is not racist, however the name 'sambo' has been used in the US in a derogatory manner. The issue has been how kid's in Japan view black people. I know in my day, they would look at black kids and call them Sambo...which wasnt good, but the J kids did not understand, it was not appropriate.

I spoke with my godson's parents and they shared the same sentiments......perhaps if the title was 'Sam's great adventure' or 'Sam's Tiger Days'...etc...it would be better accepted... The bottomline for me is, although the story is a good story, unfortunately the "sambo' name has been used in such negative ways, I would never take this book to my godson...

There are so many more books out there for kids....I have been exposed to many from my Godson's family, such as:

I did read the following about LBS and I thought the book cover was a very distingushed illustration, not like what I have seen in the previous threads.

Christopher Bing has re-illustrated Helen Bannerman's controversial tale, The Story of Little Black Sambo, and added touches such as a tiger-clawed cover and yellowed pages to create the illusion of an antique, weathered storybook.

All Things Considered, December 23, 2003 · The original story of Little Black Sambo has never gone out of print since it was first published in 1899. But the controversy around racist interpretations of "Sambo" has been so intense that the book disappeared from many bookshelves.

The story, written by Scotswoman Helen Bannerman, tells of a little boy who wanders into the jungle and surrenders his clothing piece by piece to ferocious tigers. The tigers then turn on each other in a jealous rage. As the tigers chase each other, they run so fast they melt into butter. On his way home, Little Black Sambo's father finds the pool of butter, scoops it up into a pot and takes it home. Little Black Sambo's mother decides to use the butter to make a great pancake feast for dinner.

The book was one of illustrator Christopher Bing's childhood favorites. He's reinterpreted the book, accompanying the original text with a meticulous re-drawing of Little Black Sambo. NPR's Melissa Block, host of All Things Considered, talks about the book's troubled history with Bing and David Pilgrim, curator of the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia in Big Rapids, Michigan.

Again reread my post... We associate meanings to everything.. it is up to us to change them. The Sambo story is not racist.. the name was made racist by those who took it as as symbol of their prejudice.

I totally support that book and I think those of you who mark it as racist are losing the theme of the book based on your own prejudice. You allow the public/media or whatever to play on your stereotypes that subconsciously come through. You hear Sambo and think nigger... basically.

I've read Mein Kampf and Little Black Sambo. Sambo is much more readable that's for sure. I'm not sure what Hitler was on about. Not many people make it through Mein Kampf cover to cover.

oxi, welcome to FG!!! Tell us about yourself ... asl, please.... The thing about just being a book, well, books are important. Das Kapital is just a book. The Bible is just a book. Webster's Dictionary is just a book. The Descent of Man...I even have a book club on FG. In fact, that reminds me I need to update it.

I spoke with some other friends of mine about the book. Found out that the book was read among many of them and was not considered racists. I did ask about the name 'sambo' and they said they had never heard that name being used in a deragatory manner. They agreed that perhaps it is due to the different generations. These friends are thirty something black professionals.
A few have also purchased the book for their kids.

I told them about the debate going on here and what some people were saying.....anyway, I dont plan to run out to buy the book, but hearing what my friends said, I now realize the book is a classic that even the black community has read and many have no issue with. There a are few freinds, such as my Godson's family, that felt the name had been used in a bad manner.

Well, least to say, after the convesation my friends laughed at the time I spent on this topic...they simply said...Mels, we understand, you can be a
little coocoo at times....

the thing is, japan as a whole only seems to suffer from financial discrimination (or finanacially related as in the american car wars, australian property disputes etc) when japanese are abroad a lot of the discrimination against them happens by racists mistaking them for chinese.

one aspect of race relations that pisses me off, is that in europe at least, only whites are targetted as racists.

racism against whites by blacks, asians, chinese, japanese, arabs, is never discussed. period. also inter "minority group" racism/ organised crime problems such as asian vs chinese, african vs jamaican related crime and bigotry is also never brought up.

personally, i have been attacked on more than one occasion just for being with my wife in london, and on one occasion in middle england was attacked by a group ofl racists , the police, fucking chav cops did nothing.

in the uk, it seems that pretty much everyone , well 8/10 are prejudiced no matter what their race/creed.

despite problems like stereotypes still being portrayed in books such as this, thanks to third rate entertainers like sapp and the blokes from thanes show etc, there are at least more human black images in the japanese media.

i cant wait to get back to japan, as japanese racism i can deal with, most of the people i encountered were very nice and unlike in london 99% of the people seemd decent.

sorry for the mixed up post, but what i`m trying to say is that the ignorance in publishing such a book, compared to the ignorance making up the absolute scum of 99% of the population in england is trivial.

imho

The book published with the name combined with a golliwog style main character illustration was unacceptable.

But the book that was just shown, didn't bother me.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

I know remembering that must pump your blood with total hatred. I could only wish the worst medieval death on them if that happened to me. I say that without exaggeration, but at least you can take satisfaction in the fact that those lowlife scumbag loser shit for brain rotten cunts have to wake up every morning in their own disgusting pathetic flesh with only their own pea sized fucktard brains to guide them through life. May there be a Hell for them to burn in.

When I was teaching high school in Japan a few years ago I actually did hear "chibi kuro sambo" used by students to make fun of a girl who had skin that was naturally darker than your average Japanese person. I was pretty surprised at first because in my American mind it sounded like they were calling her a nigger. But then I realized they probably had no idea how offensive it sounded.

Neo, you fucking schmuck, what magical place are you from that is devoid of racism? Obviously it's not on this planet.

Actualy I could count on my hands how few black people I saw in my life before I moved. Racial issues never came up and there were no real generalisations. No real institutionalized racism except from what I learned from American TV. So I had a clean slate to forum my own generalizations. Black people are not doing themselves any favours on how they are trying to make me feel bad for nothing my ancestors ever did.

1) Ah My Goddess: A sick and disgusting show which causes children under the age of 18 to think they are capable of love. The main female character is clearly under 18, and is forced into a romantic relationship by an older man who "wishes" for her to be his girlfriend forever. He even KISSES her, and she appears NAKED. That poor girl must be so confused.

THIS IS THE BIGGEST BUNCH OF BULLSHIT I'VE EVER READ! THIS GUY NEEDS TO GET HIS HEAD OUT OF HIS ASS!! :x :x :x :x :x :x
Keiichi is a college student and Belldandy being a goddess, is quite considerably older than him. While it's true that Keiichi does wish for Belldandy to stay with him forever, she stays with him not because of that, but because she truly loves him, and he truly loves him.

Sorry I went berserk, but Kosuke Fujishima is an author who treats his female characters with respect, something you don't see that often in most anime and manga.

On a slightly more cool headed note, no one says anything about Keitaro of Love Hina getting the shit beat out of him for no reason by Naru , Motoko, and occasionly his own aunt Haruka. But, after hearing how letcherous and disrespectful some Japanese men are to women, I guess it's Ken Akamatusu's way of paying penance for his low life brethren.
