It is surprising that the English girl would be so overly trusting that she would opt to teach a guy like that in private when she would probably never have anything to do with him back in England. One looks at the guy tells me fuck-up.

In Japan Kimchi issue is exactly untouchable.
This complacency does crop up a good deal among foreigners in Japan. It it still, by and large, a very safe country but people do drop their guard more than is prudent. A single woman can probably walk home alone at night along empty Tokyo streets without incident but she wouldn't do that in may other places."Like so many people our age she wanted to see the world, and for some reason felt safer in Japan than in this country. We are all made constantly aware of the dangers on our own streets. Thousands of young people go abroad each year, and for some reason the dangers of home seem to be forgotten. If Lindsay's death can make at least one young person abroad be more vigilant then perhaps one more family can be spared the pain, the devastation, and the despair we are all experiencing."
She had only been in the country since October but had already developed a concept of "crazy Japan". She could well have had the image before she even arrived. I think it is interesting that AK wondered whether she took on work outside NOVA because it seemed like the thing to do. It's difficult to believe that she wouldn't have had reservations about visiting a male student's apartment on her own in Britain. She can only have decided that it was OK in Japan because other people do the same thing - or else told her it was fine - and she had already decided that Japanese men were no threat."Don't worry about the guy who chased me home, it's just crazy Japan."
