Everyone seems to want to equate this case to the Obara, which is crap. The case is more like Azumi Muto case.

Unsucessful son of a doctor with some serious psychological problems murders a women and tries to hide the body in a very haphazard way.

It is surprising that the English girl would be so overly trusting that she would opt to teach a guy like that in private when she would probably never have anything to do with him back in England. One looks at the guy tells me fuck-up.

My thoughts exactly. I think that being overseas can bring out bad decisions in people. Plus, maybe she felt some kind of pressure to get the extra cash by doing privates. Maybe even like peer pressure, like only working for the eikaiwa's not cool. Not that other teachers would be badgering her to do it or anything... if you've ever taught eikaiwa you might know what I'm getting at.

Bird, I'm surprised that you have not recognized that if this dud's IQ was two points higher he would be a shrub. Don't look for a lot of illumination from that quarter!

But, following Mulboyne's point that she was white and from the UK . This also brings rise to the possibility that the media may be trying to show their concern because they overtly wish to cover their guilty feelings of how badly Japan, the media and the police, have bungled and continue to foul up the Lucy Blackman case. May not be the case, but just an interesting thought!

I think the rather grotesque nature of hiding a body in a bathtub filled with sand on a apartment balcony was sufficient to get a fair bit of J news interest, even if the victim was Japanese, but since the victim is a FG, the odds are the story will have longer legs than it would have if it only involved J folks. Also the fact that she was pretty young and was a teacher may add to the interest factor along with the fact the guy is still on the loose.

The investigation is off, they found his socks!

CHIBA -- Socks apparently belonging to a man wanted for abandoning the body of a murdered British woman have been found near a railway station, police said.

The socks were found at a location some 600 meters from the apartment of Tatsuya Ichihashi near Gyotoku Station on the subway Tozai Line.

I wonder if this guy had read "The Gajin Hanzai Ura File"?:D
Also, the Japanese still remember the Satsuma Senso and why it started.

British teacher chased on way home days before her death

ICHIKAWA, Chiba Prefecture--A British woman whose death likely was the result of foul play only recently became acquainted with a man who lived in the apartment where her body was found Monday, police said.

The naked body of Lindsay Ann Hawker, a 22-year-old teacher at a major language school chain, was found in a sand-filled bathtub on the balcony of an apartment here.

She also had bruises on her face, police said.

On Tuesday, police obtained an arrest warrant for Tatsuya Ichihashi, 28, who fled barefoot when police visited his apartment to question him about Hawker's disappearance and discovered the body.

While police suspect Ichihashi killed her, they are currently only seeking him on suspicion of abandoning her body.

On Wednesday, the online version of the British newspaper The Independent said Hawker sent a message March 20 to her boyfriend Ryan Garside that said in part, "Don't worry about the guy who chased me home, it's just crazy Japan."

Garside and Hawker's father, Bill, arrived in Japan on Wednesday.

Chiba prefectural police said Ichihashi, who graduated from the horticulture department of Chiba University in March 2005, became acquainted with Hawker outside the school where she taught--just days before her body was found.

The police said Ichihashi visited Hawker at her apartment in Funabashi that she shared with two women, an Australian and a Canadian.

They told police they had never met Ichihashi until he came by their place just days before she disappeared.

The school where Hawker taught said it had no record of Ichihashi ever being a student.

Hawker's roommates told the school Monday morning they became alarmed when she had not returned home, officials said.

The school then contacted the police, who searched Hawker's room and found a piece of paper with a sketch of Hawker's likeness, the name Tatsuya and his telephone number written on it.

Police used that to track down Ichihashi to his apartment, where he lived alone.

A resident in a unit below Ichihashi's apartment said she heard intermittent dull thuds as if something was being rolled over as well as metallic noises between 8 p.m. Sunday and 1 a.m. Monday.

Ichihashi, who did not work, relied on more than 100,000 yen sent to him each month by his parents in Gifu Prefecture.

Hawker's father told reporters that his daughter came to Japan with the hope of finding work as a teacher.

He said he had believed Japan was a very safe country.

Meanwhile, Garside said he had planned to marry her.(IHT/Asahi: March 29,2007)

RIP :(

Although psychos like the murderer are statistically rare, I wonder if teachers who "free lance", particularly women, should all insist on meeting their students in a public place - especially if the student lives alone.

'A Wonderful Person'
Updated: 16:01, Wednesday March 28, 2007

The devastated sisters of Lindsay Hawker have told how their family has been torn apart by her murder in Japan.

"It hurts more than you can imagine," they said in a statement paying tribute to their "loving and friendly sister".

The body of 22-year-old Lindsay from Brandon near Coventry, was found on the balcony of a flat in east Tokyo late on Monday night.

Police who discovered her body said she was found naked, with severe injuries to her face and arms, and her possessions had been strewn across the room.

Image

Officers have issued an arrest warrant for 28-year-old Tatsuya Ichihashi who was seen fleeing the scene barefoot.

Lindsay's father Bill Hawker and her boyfriend Ryan Garside flew to the Japanese capital this morning to officially identify the body.

With tears streaming down his cheeks, Mr Hawker spoke of his pride in his daughter and how she always tried to help everyone.

Mr Hawker insisted that his daughter, who started teaching in Tokyo last October, had not been in a relationship with Ichihashi, but was "tricked" by him.

Image

"I know that Lindsay was not in any sort of relationship with the suspect," he said.

"I believe my daughter was tricked into going to this man's apartment under the pretext of giving English lessons.

"My daughter was a lovely girl, she would have helped anybody. And it was because she would help anybody, she is where she is now.

"I'll carry this picture of my daughter forever and I will not rest until the man who killed my daughter is caught."

Mr Garside said he and Miss Hawker had planned to travel the world after saving money in Japan.

"I loved her so, so much. We planned to one day get married and start a family," he said.

"That man has ruined mine and Lindsay's plan - he ruined our dream."

If Ichihashi is not zainichi, J-media will report this case in detail and J-poice too investigate strictly.
In Blackman case as soon as finding Obara was zainich ,J-media got quiet.
Its not joke.

Tatsuya Ichihashi said to Lindsay `DO YOU REMEMBER ME` in English, according to Yomiuri Terebi. Not sure how they know he said this to her, maybe one of her room mates heard her. Also on one News Report that they were more than friends, but I am not sure the Japanese press have everything right, as the English press says she did not even know the man.

Her sisters said:
"Like so many people our age she wanted to see the world, and for some reason felt safer in Japan than in this country. We are all made constantly aware of the dangers on our own streets. Thousands of young people go abroad each year, and for some reason the dangers of home seem to be forgotten. If Lindsay's death can make at least one young person abroad be more vigilant then perhaps one more family can be spared the pain, the devastation, and the despair we are all experiencing."
This complacency does crop up a good deal among foreigners in Japan. It it still, by and large, a very safe country but people do drop their guard more than is prudent. A single woman can probably walk home alone at night along empty Tokyo streets without incident but she wouldn't do that in may other places.

I don't think this complacency arises simply because travellers accept the image of safety at face value. The representation of Japan in the international press plays a big role too. We all know how "wacky Japan" stories are extremely popular. They make up a good portion of the news on this site and there are dozens of Japan bloggers out there who also pick up on the panty thieves, the upskirt photographers and dutch wife fetishists. To make a sweeping generalization, the image you might build up of a Japanese man from this kind of coverage is that he is perverted but harmless.

It could be simply that white people don't see Asians as a whole as threatening but I can't think that travellers in China regard Chinese men as essentially harmless in the same way. I think this is more to do with how people view Japan specifically. Guy Jean has already noted the victim's sad comment on being stalked:
"Don't worry about the guy who chased me home, it's just crazy Japan."
She had only been in the country since October but had already developed a concept of "crazy Japan". She could well have had the image before she even arrived. I think it is interesting that AK wondered whether she took on work outside NOVA because it seemed like the thing to do. It's difficult to believe that she wouldn't have had reservations about visiting a male student's apartment on her own in Britain. She can only have decided that it was OK in Japan because other people do the same thing - or else told her it was fine - and she had already decided that Japanese men were no threat.

Japan is such a safe country that people can run higher risks in the country and not face serious consequences. There's certainly no need to treat every Japanese as a potential stalker, rapist or murderer but the sisters' comments are worth heeding: the country isn't Toytown either.

I listened to a BBC radio programme today which covered this story. The broadcaster was posing the question "Are white girls in danger in Japan?" The studio guests rejected that idea - arguing that there are are very few violent cases so it would be wrong to jump to any conclusions.

Listeners has some very mixed observations. One woman had visited her daughter who had been teaching for two years in Japan and praised the country to the skies. Another former teacher said that violent pornography was everywhere and Japanese men had a perverted view of foreign women. A Japanese girl found the constant descriptions of the two murdered English girls as "beautiful" a little troubling; as if all Japanese men simply can't control themselves in the face of an attractive westerner.

Lesley Downer, who lived in Japan on and off for 12 years and has written a number of books on the country, didn't cover herself in glory. Asked about the heavy media reporting in Japan she said (in essence) - I can't really comment. I'm not sure that there is a lot of coverage. I checked the Japan Times site online and didn't find a single article on the case.

About the last comment, I agree. I think that the Japanese media are playing it down as much as possible. There was a dog in Iwajishima (I think) that died of food poisoning which was in the same place as the murder on one news website.

The cop apparently had a hold of the guy from behind, the guy used to be a Karate-Ka and did an elbow to the sternum on the cop as he was holding him.

Also, it was reported that the girl had a broken neck but that death was due to asphyxiation. So he broke her neck while strangling her?
