Japanese Temple Sprayed With Graffiti After Withdrawal From Olympic Torch Relay

Pull out of the torch ceremony because you're worried about the safety of the temple. Then the temple gets vandalized because it pulled out of the ceremony. Oh, the irony.

Remind me... has this ever happened before? The torch relay needing so much security it defies the whole point?

I think this has always happened, although not at this level. I remember my boss was a torch runner during the 1982 LA Olympics, he said someone tried to grab his torch.. twice.
But obviously that was not anywhere this level of protest. That was more prankster-ish than protest.

The torch is being guarded by a huge vagina!

A part of me is wondering why some piece of vital paperwork wasn't 'lost' at some J ministry just in time to prevent the touch run, esp when it was clear that this would be a problematic event after all the trouble in Europe (nor will this sort of effort ever cut any ice with the Chinese)....It was just three years ago when those anti-Japanese riots in China about J school books took place and China's famed security apparatus was 'surprisingly' lethargic to respond to them.

One thing I didn't realize about the torch relay was how much the Olympic host country was involved. In China, sure, it's China's show, but sending para-military or police personnel overseas to protect the torches seems strange.

The marvelous thing about the ignore button is you don't have to read what trolls post, unless people quote them.
