Number of suicides dips below 30,000 in 2012, but younger victims rising
The number of suicide victims in Japan dipped below the 30,000 mark for the first time in 15 years last year, but suicides among young people are increasing, National Police Agency (NPA) statistics have shown.

The statistics for 2012, released on Jan. 17, show that 27,766 people committed suicide across Japan last year, down by 2,885 from 2011. It is the first time that the yearly number of suicides has fallen below 30,000 since 1997.

Since the NPA started collecting the statistics in 1978, the number of suicides had hovered around 20,000 to 25,000 annually until 1998, when the figure shot up to over 30,000. That year, the country was being plagued by financial uncertainty and a further downturn in the economy.

In 2003, the number of people who took their own lives reached an all-time high of 34,427, but the number has declined by at least 1,000 annually since 2010. The Office for Policy of Suicide Prevention at the Cabinet Office will analyze the factors behind the decrease.

By gender, 19,216 men and 8,550 women killed themselves in 2012, down by 1,739 and 1,146 from the previous year, respectively. By prefecture, Tokyo topped the list of all 47 prefectures with the number of suicides standing at 2,760 last year, while Tottori Prefecture saw the least number of suicides at 130. The number of suicides decreased in 38 prefectures, with Tokyo, Kanagawa, Osaka and Chiba prefectures seeing at least 200 fewer suicides, respectively.

In areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, there were 508 suicides in Miyagi Prefecture, 353 in Iwate Prefecture and 452 in Fukushima Prefecture in 2012. The figures were up by 25, down by 48 and down by 73 from 2011, respectively.

According to the Cabinet Office, the number of suicides among the younger generations has been on the rise over the past decade. In 2011, the number of suicides among minors stood at 622, up by 36 from 2001, while the corresponding figures for those in their 20s and 30s stood at 3,304 and 4,455, up by 209 and 833, respectively.

"There still are many suicides among youths amid the deteriorating employment situation," said a Cabinet Office representative.

After the number of suicides across all generations topped 30,000 a year, the government implemented the Basic Act on Suicide Prevention in 2006. In August last year, the government drew up a comprehensive suicide prevention initiative, including measures against suicides caused by bullying.
