As dimwit says, this is caution on the part of media groups. I think they actually lost a court case when someone sued them for showing the handcuffs. They would be especially careful about Miura since he won a series of judgements against them last time he was arrested.

FresnoBee: Attorney Mark Geragos takes Japanese businessman's murder case
Celebrity attorney Mark Geragos confirmed Saturday he is representing a Japanese businessman accused of fatally shooting his wife in the 1980s and said his first order of business will be to try to get the charges dismissed on grounds of double jeopardy..."The first thing I'm going to do is challenge the arrest warrant," Geragos told The Associated Press. "He is once in jeopardy"...Geragos said he hopes extradition proceedings can be delayed until his petition to have charges dismissed is considered. If that is the case, and the charges are thrown out, Geragos said the Saipan arrest order would be invalidated and Miura could return home. The attorney, who hasn't met his client yet, said he was contacted by Miura's lawyers in Saipan and asked to handle legal matters in Los Angeles.

Geragos, a frequent TV legal commentator whose clients have included Michael Jackson, Winona Ryder and convicted wife killer Scott Peterson, is no stranger to the limelight. Just last week, he won a multimillion-dollar judgment against a private charter plane company that secretly videotaped his conversations with Jackson when he was working for the pop star. However, he said the blizzard of phone calls and personal contacts by members of the Japanese news media he has received since word began to leak out that he had joined Miura's legal team has been unprecedented in any case he's ever handled.

Thanks dimwit and Mulboyne for the comments...When I saw it, the mosaic was on his groin area, so I figured that it was covering his handcuffs (his hands were at his waist in front of him) or that this case had taken a very interesting turn of events.

From the Japan Times:

...In the 1980s, the media had loose standards regarding the privacy of celebrities and people involved in crimes like Miura, said Hiroyuki Shinoda, editor in chief of Tsukuru, a monthly media critic magazine. "The public was also entertained (by peering into the private lives of such people) and . . . encouraged (the media) to go further," Shinoda said...The Miura case became a starting point for the media to consider the rights of crime suspects, media insiders said. For instance, the media now blur out images of the hands of people in handcuffs and are more careful about reporting crime cases that police have yet to investigate, they said. One reason for the change was that Miura filed about 530 damages suits against media firms, including many powerful leading newspapers and broadcasters, claiming their reports implicated him as the mastermind behind his wife's slaying and his rights had been damaged by their prying into his personal life. Miura once told a news conference that he won 80 percent of some 200 cases in which rulings had been made. In 476 of the some 530 lawsuits, Miura fought all the court battles by himself. His extremely high success rate in the courts shocked media companies, prompting them to draw up new internal guidelines to pay more heed to the rights of a suspect in crime reporting...

LA prosecutors insist they can try Japanese man
By LINDA DEUTSCH
AP 08/08/2008

California prosecutors insisted Friday that a Japanese businessman can be prosecuted for the 1981 murder of his wife in Los Angeles even though he was acquitted of the crime in Japan.
In a 60-page court filing, prosecutors said Kazuyoshi Miura cannot claim double jeopardy because he never entered a plea under California law and was not tried here.
At the time of the killing, California law barred prosecution of someone already tried in a foreign jurisdiction. However, that law was changed in 2005...more...

My wife just told me that she saw on TV that Miura Kazuyoshi is dead.

According to a news report on Yahoo Japan it was suicide.

NHK just announced he hung himself in his cell. Interesting, I said maybe he was guilty and my wife said he must have been tired of all the proceedings. I think that completely encompasses the Japanese attitude toward suicide.

WTF, it smells fishy

Postby Phantom » Sat Oct 11, 2008 10:18 pm

A bit strange that: within 24 hours of arriving in the continental United States, and under constant supervision he apparently hangs himself. He wasn't depressed and was actually looking forward to fighting the case, according to his lawyer.

Maybe he wasn't familiar with U.S. police or prison guards and argued or touched one of them, which merits an instant and sustained Tazering. At his age that could be fatal. "Suicide by provoked Tazering" maybe.

Considering the title of this thread and the current fate of the real OJ, I wonder whether we won't be soon seeing some more, shall we say freshly squeezed juice? At least the neck part. (Not that I'm encouraging anyone to take their own life, mind you.)
I feel a bit sorry for OJ. How is he going to find Nicole's killers if he's behind bars?
I tend to agree with TFG about Miura. With him and OJ jailed, I guess it's a sign that fate tends to catch up with us all in some way in the end.

Miura sported counterculture catchphrase cap

Kazuyoshi Miura wore a cap printed with this slogan when he was transported from Saipan to Los Angeles on Friday. The latter two words refer to drugs, and the catchphrase is used by some drug users to say goodbye....

Was having dinner last night with gf and her folks, in the sticks, when Miura and his hat came on the news. Dad asked what his hat meant, and I, having a slight plethora of knowledge on the subject, explained. I think I'm not going to be having dinner with them for awhile, or at least until I submit a blood test showing that I am not a Russian sumo wrestler.

Some of the J-press is already on the "theorizing" saying that the cap had such meanings as "peace, love, sayonara, etc." saying that Miura was giving out subliminal messages saying that he was going to depart from this world. Whatever, he killed himself. The end of this story.

Only if American OJ had the balls to kill himself as well.

The press has gotta come up with happy endings to cover how bad they started off with various rags discribing it as illegal political revenge by the US and other goofball theories, then shifting to wild ass explanations for the crime in question, but never straying far from the insinuasions that the Hew Hess of Hay was acting unreasonable in seizing a unique person in another country (Saipan?) and trying to haul him to the prison, after he had been properly acquitted (on appeal) by a Japanese Court and we know they never make mistakes.

Now that he has performed the ancient unique ritual for admitting responsibility by offing himself, they must hide their original accusations by making a different branding on the story.

I would have thought the media would have been happy to see him go down, considering all the money he made from law suits against them following winning his appeal.

It just seems normal that the country where a murder happened would want to try the person accused of the crime regardless of what the courts decided in that person's home country. The media doesn't seem to take this angle. They should just try putting the tabi on the other foot and consider whether it doesn't seem just or not.

Mainichi: Evidence points to choking, beating in Miura's jail death
The lawyer for a Japanese businessman whose jail cell death was declared suicide by hanging said Sunday a pathologist has concluded that Kazuyoshi Miura was killed. Mark Geragos, Miura's lawyer, said the pathologist he hired to examine the body found deep tissue injuries on his back that indicated a beating. He also said a hematoma on Miura's larynx could have come from a forced choking. He said the pathologist concluded the injury could not have been caused by a self-inflicted hanging. "All of this is consistent with a murder," Geragos said. Asked who may have killed Miura, Geragos said "whoever had him in custody"...more...

Maybe he was killed but he wasn't there long enough to make any enemies.
