Dood... while Japan is not as bad as Australia (where every plant and animals are out there to get you)... The place is already quite dangerous "as is"...
(quake, typhoon, tsunami, flood, bears, foxes, rabbid monkeys... feels like the place is earth secret lab to develop the most efficient weapon against mankind)

Actually, I've done quite a bit of driving (sliding) on it. While I can't claim "control" on it, you can definitely guide the car left or right if you let of the accelerator and don't panic brake.

Coligny wrote:Nah... the book is also quite clear on this, you must have slowed down before reaching the pedestrian, not jam the brakes 1 m before...
Same for passing them, you'r not supposed to change lane just before reaching their asses. Depending the size of the black ice patch it can help avoid collision...

The fact that it's considered legally as "passing" just means that the 'no overtaking' or 'no entering in the right lane for overtaking' rule don't apply. but unlike what most drivers do, entering the right side of the road for passing don't give you any kind of priority over the oncoming traffic (this behaviour will be the death of my horn soon...)

I'm kinda going on the assumption the pedestrian wasn't visible until the last second, in which case all you can do is react.

IparryU wrote:a cousin of mine was driving home from a family dinner. had a beer at the start of the evening and went home 4.5 hours later.

was driving down the road at 35MPH (speed limit) and a guy runs right out in front of his car and gets killed. Cops said that it was really tragic, shit situation and the dead guys wife explained why he jumped out... Ends up that a bee flew into the guys window so he stopped and got out of his car and ran away from it...

but by law, in any fatal accident case, both drivers must be BAC tested. my cousin weighing in at 250lbs, after 1 beer blew some crazy low BAC and is facing 10+ years in prison now.

shows you that some jackass doing something stupid can get you in trouble despite his retarded actions.

Wow, that is indeed fucked. After one beer and 4.5 hours, unless you're a 80lb lemur, that shit should be almost entirely out of your system. Dude running in the street finally had Darwin catch up with him but 10+ years in jail for shit like that? How many years did that sick fuck that kidnapped/imprisoned/raped some little girl for years get?

Sure, all well and good, but you wrote "swerve" - which will work only when your tires have more purchase that you'll have on black ice. That's a far cry from "guide", which is something to do gently when you have proper time and distance and find yourself in trouble on ice or some other slick surface.

Bicycles definitely make the streets of Tokyo a lot more dangerous. There have also been some high profile cases in Manhattan the last couple of years where cyclist have killed pedestrians by riding recklessly.

Indeed, got a little to anxious with my adjectives :D

I didn't say they were equally dangerous, did I?. It seems you're all for personal responsibility except when it comes to pedestrians and cyclists.

the guy you are talking about (me thinks) was the white religious guy... would google it but would take too long and would get sick from reading all the nasty shit people do...

i pass on searching, but i would guess 52 years if there was a "serious" trial and 12 if he got some shit judge that liked his work.

EDIT: i would change the years if it was in the mid-west or south... CA gives you a separate charge for each hole you penetrate and with what you do it with... mind you kidnapping/imprisoned can go hand in hand (penal code wise) and imprisonment could be charged as a sexual act depending on what is done...

If it was CA... he is fucked... if medwest i would half it, south... he may be in a gutter or bleed out in jail.

Yah. The other morning driving to work through Shinjuku and a J-lad blows thru a red light texting on his stolen looking amachari. He bounces off my hood and lands wif a few scratches and a bent bike. When the traffic fuzz came out and did their investigation they asked me {Big Boy did you think the green signal meant you could just drive thru the intersection? Fak ya said I} Wrong answer!

If memory serve me well. When the light TURN green it means you should proceed with caution after checking the road was clear.

Now if you were not stopped at said redlight... (you're still fucked for the lack of control of your vehicle...)

It all reminds me of India, in which the red light means that you can continue to move as long as green traffic does not come, and a green light means one cannot move as long as red traffic moves. In effect the meaning of red and green has reversed there.

I've been crossing the intersection at the west gate of Yoyogi Park for years. At night, for 3 seconds after the light turns red, there is a car that will run through it without fail. This is kind of normal for Japan, but due to the foliage, it is impossible for any car to see any would-be pedestrians waiting to cross. So many times I've thought of sticking the front end of my bike out just to teach someone a lesson. It really is a fucked intersection.

On that note, why the fuck don't cops just start writing traffic tickets to boost the economy? That intersection alone would make millions.

Call me culturally ignorant but, when a little tiny shrine has been built by the roadside (almost always notice them at intersections, dangerous blind curves, etc) does that basically mean someone got splattered over someone's windshield at that place?
And instead of removing the obstacles to visibility, installing a traffic light, etc. the solution is to put up a little shrine?

If they don't catch you on camera or only one cop sees the offense they won't bother writing a ticket because they don't want to fuck up the numbers.

Ah, but you see these are built so you can trip over them and add to the carnage. Remember the dead like company.

Re: Driving accidents

Postby matsuki » Mon Oct 21, 2013 12:06 pm

So the past few months since I bought a soccermom-mobile, I've been driving waaaay more than I used to and I can't help but think there are a ton of accidents here. Not a day goes by where I don't see idiots running red lights and other idiots jumping the light a few seconds before it turrns green. It's like there are no traffic laws, merely suggestions....and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out when 2+ of these idiots meet at an intersection, there is gonna be trouble. Then there are all these truck drivers that wind the piss out of their trucks and swerve as if it is a go kart. Anyone have any links to traffic accident stats? I imagine they're super skewed by the millions of gold license holding "paper drivers" but still, I'm surprised I haven't witnessed a major accident yet.

I actually clipped the ass end of a bus while checking my blind spot to change lanes... They still let me get a gold card... I was like WTF. I asked the wife and she said since no one was hurt and the police weren't issuing a citation then no harm no foul.

Now I clipped the bus in basically 1.5 seconds while looking over my shoulder. AND I see fuckers heavily engrossed in texting and putting on make up while narrowly avoiding serious collisions. It makes one really wonder if this is indeed the twilight zone.

When getting my gold card they ran a video of the most common accidents for gold card carriers and it was mostly people trying to turn right across oncoming traffic. Not sure if that helps statistically but the other thing here is the one death per week in okinawa involving moped riders.... or so they tell us.

Not really, when I was 18 I flipped a car end for end while hotrodding. My old man still won't let me live it down so catching the corner of a bus doesn't bother me.

That looks like more than just a clip  but I was more referring to having a captive audience experience the debacle, rather than the usual 1 or so in another car.

Good place to mention this but I picked up a really neat driving recorder....totally recommend you do the same.

I was told by a friend over at the driving school that if they do get in accident here on oki they are supposed to act somewhat hurt to get the other party to somewhat initiate guilt. Granted its hearsay but looking back on the incident it seems exactly what happened.

I quick went through the article you posted but it seems like accepting that "token" percent of responsibility is almost customary? If that's the case it irks me to no end.

Yea definitely will look into one, thanks for the rec. There was a whopping 2 passengers on the bus and when the driver came off the bus holding his neck saying "kubi itai" the old lady looked at him like "are you serious" My car looks worse because everything save the hood and panel is fiberglass.

If it's stock body Nissan Cube, it's injection molded parts, ABS and the like, especially the bumper, needed to be able to bounce on shopping carts bumps, not crack like fiberglass do.
Not fiberglass... Waaayyyy to expensive for Nissan standards...
