Elijah Craig is pretty common at bars in the US. You probably just never looked. Gentleman Jack isn't as common in bars but you can get it at pretty much any liquor store. I have learned there are some bourbons like Four Roses Black Label that are only available in Japan.

And most JUSCO/Aeon chain stores have Budweiser bottles incredibly cheap. For a chaser, like George Thorogood would do............

Four Roses Super Premium is also Japan only. There are apparently also some other brands that are only sold in Japan. Learned this last month when a friend who's a big bourbon drinker visited from the States. He was on a mission to drink only in Japan bourbons.

God, a friend of mine gave me a bottle of Kirin Whiskey... This stuff is horrid. It's like 50% alcohol and 50% nightmare. No wonder he gave it to me.

Merging US, Japan work cultures a challenge for Beam Suntory
The head of Japanese whisky maker Suntory says merging Japanese and American work cultures remains a major challenge in his company's acquisition of the maker of Jim Beam bourbon.

Takeshi Niinami, the president of Suntory Holdings Ltd., said Friday that integration is not easy because of differing career aspirations and compensation systems for Japanese and American employees.

Suntory bought the former Beam Inc. in 2014.

Niinami said his goal is to create a global workforce that shares ideas freely. He conceded, though, that he doesn't have a solution yet to overcome the differences.

He said the combined Beam Suntory will have to concentrate on integration for at least three to four years, so it has no interest in additional acquisitions for now.

Rare Japanese whiskey set auctioned at almost $1 million

Image

A rare Japanese whiskey collection has fetched 7,192,000 Hong Kong dollars (about $917,000 or ¥97.5 million), at an auction in Hong Kong, according to British auction house Bonhams.

The high price reflected the popularity of Japanese whiskey, which has been praised by people around the world.

The Hanyu Ichiro’s Full Card Series, which was put up for auction on Friday, is composed of 54 bottles sold by Venture Whisky Co., a company headed by Ichiro Akuto in Saitama Prefecture.

Each bottle is named after playing cards in a full pack and was released between 2005 and 2014.

As only a limited number of each bottle was released, the series sparked a frenzy of interest among some whiskey enthusiasts.

Although the auction house had expected the whiskey set to sell for HK$4.5 million to HK$6 million (about ¥61 million to ¥81 million), the actual price exceeded such expectations.

The successful bid price was twice that of the same collection auctioned off at a different Bonhams auction in 2015. The set in the 2015 auction sold for about HK$3.8 million (about ¥51 million).

Before the auction, Daniel Lam of Bonhams noted that market demand for Japanese whiskey was “at its strongest.” He highlighted the collection’s rarity, saying it is believed that no more than four such sets exist in the world.

With the recent summers, I wonder how well that mess keeps. Even with AC and insulation, the temps I measured weren't great so I picked up an on sale wine chiller last month...can't have my good stuff going to shit.
