Why is it OK to impose a cost burden on new structures and not existing ones? Making a new building handicap accessible can definitely raise the cost of construction. There's obviously a fine line and in cramped cities like Tokyo and NYC a lot of buildings can't be retrofit. However if a business moves into an existing structure and does major reconstruction to achieve the look they want, it seems reasonable to require them to include accessibility in their building plan.

Sure, if they want to do it and think there is a market there for it. I agree about that place and the many like them. If anything, the best solution for that place would be an easily deployed ramp cover for the stairs, or a supply of people like me who are willing and able to offer help up the stairs, though I can dig a lot of people might not like having to ask in the first place. The main problem here in Canada is retrofitting is often enforced for principle's sake, which is meddling class cat lady dogma and must be beaten like the filthy emospastic rabid dog it is. New places and all public places should be regulated to be accessible, but existing structures should be left to the owner. And due to the less conformist nature of Japanese civil society compared to our little rock, much like smoking bans that is probably how it will be resolved.

Besides, it's a Taco Bell..................... It just reminded me of those sleazy Filipina hostess bars Debuto screamed about being banned from:

The Disability Discrimination Act in the UK was a very successful pieces of legislation. It improved the lives of lots of people, changed attitudes for the better and it didn't cause any of the grief that was predicted. The secret was two magic words "reasonable adjustments".

Make it a criminal offense with significant penalties to wilfully refuse to make reasonable adjustments to include disabled people. This concentrates minds wonderfully.

If you are a small business in an old, inaccessible building then you might not be able to make reasonable adjustments. Fine. If you are a mega property developer building a new shopping mall you can and have to make it fully inclusive.

And all shades in between. If necessary, let a jury decide what is reasonable and what isn't on a case by case basis. The man on the Clapham omnibus and all that. However, I am not aware of any difficult or controversial cases.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

That sound pretty much like what happened with the Americans with Disabilities Act. I'm sure there were businesses that got screwed which is a shame but overall it improved the lives of a lot of people who would never have had enough numbers to affect any real change through market forces.

I would call it a grandfather clause. Building codes and regulations change all the time and those concerned with that need to keep up with it and design accordingly whereas an existing structure might not be amenable to a retrofit. Anyways, I fully agree with what you and WS wrote there, especially that phrase Reasonable Adjustment. Increased accesibility has been a minor but important social justice victory in a lot of first world countries for a very exposed and relatively uninfluential minority.

My only real peeve is how emotional all the cat lady advocates get. I am sick and tired of this newer style appeal to emotion rather than logic and decency. It's childish and often hysterical. But I would never suggest handicapped people don't deserve every litte step up they can get.

On the other hand, Vancouver city has banned doorknobs. They must be Government Approved ergonomically sufficient lever style door handles. That makes me want to throw buckets of racoon poo on charity advocates just for the fun of watching the shocked look on their fat stupid bleating Empathy Addled mugs. [url]

The locals seem to be really excited about this based on my Facebook feed for the last week or so. I have a feeling there are going to be Krispy Kreme level lines for a while.

Oddly, Mulboyne mentions that: "Flying under the radar compared with Taco Bell, Australia's Mexican diner Guzman y Gomez opens in Harajuku next week: http://gyg.jp/"

At twelve bucks a burrito, I might pass on that wombat burrito.

Though I'm wondering that their source is as the Taco Bell Japan website only seems to have links to their Facebook, Instragram, and Twitter accounts.

It's entirely possible they did take it down. I am pretty surprise at how shitty the website is though.

Bingo! Taco Bell Japan pulled all their websites at 2pm yesterday. They're trying to blame their 20-something California PR girl for the mess (which is a fucking joke since the Japanese partner, Assrapport Dining Co., should have checked the site if they didn't create it).

Asrapport Dining Co.20150421225735.png

The Japanese menu also had translated "Cheesy fries" as 「安っぽいフリース」(Low Quality fleece).

Ah, fries. I was wondering what they fuck they meant. Amazing that they'd fuck up that bad launching a website in 2015.

Maybe they did it by purpose.

So that all Japanese will hear about them.

Looks like it costs a bit more in Japan.

270 yen for a taco, 500 yen for a fajita burrito, and 2700 yen for a taco box. Fuck that shit.

•Stopped by the Shibuya Taco Bell today, 2 pm Sunday afternoon.
•Told, “One hour wait.”
•Specifically was told to, “Wait 30 minutes in line and then 30 minutes for food to be served.”
NOPE.

While I would never wish to give succour to the nutritional anti-Darwinists, it has always amazed me how few Japanese enjoy refried beans. This is a people that think sugar soaked mini kidney beans are a sweet, FFS. There is actually an entire episode on one of those "Anemic Weabo whines about how tough it is in Japan" video logs (Viary??) dedicated to his misery flavoured joy at having found some canned black beans.

So....all they need to do is add some sugar and the bean burritos will become a popular dessert item?

The Mexican God will hate you for that, but it's probably not a bad idea. Sadly.

So, any ready sources of canned or dry real (not soy) black beans in Tokyo? The Weabo in that video can't seem to do anything but put his navel gazing self-pity into droning verbiage, rather than doing something useful like telling us WTF he bought them. F'in Weatards.

The best collection of canned and dried beans I've seen in Tokyo is at the Nissin supermarket in Azabu Juban.

Otherwise, anywhere you find a Brazilian community, you find beans. Since most of the Brazilians here are from São Paulo state the most common beans are pinto beans ウズラマメ feijão carioca (paradoxically), but you do also occasionally find the black beans more popular in Rio de Janeiro state.

Kidney beans aren't that rare in Tokyo. You can usually find small cans in bigger supermarkets. They're nothing special but at least they aren't sweet.

Yeah, it's more stocking up for Okinawa (Ishigaki). You can buy almost any sort of prepared hideous pseudo-food available at Walmart in the US but you can't buy normal ingredients like beans (other than kidney beans).

Maybe I'll just try out the Foreign Buyer's Club. At least then I won't have to carry it. Anyways, that Nissin place looks like it fits the bill. Tanks.

Costco use to carry everything. I could get my beans, tortillas and/or taco shells, plus and 5 lbs of shredded cheese there. I had to import the spices though.

There have been some good mexican places that have come and gone over the years. I'm hoping Taco bell follows. A chipotle would be nice.
