So you think age discrimination against Japanese is OK but not gaijin? Interesting.

In my experience, the average 50 year old Japanese office dude has the same management skill as a 28 year old American or Brit.

In my experience, quite a few Japanese lack communication skills for management, especially when FGs are among the managed. I am not talking about language skills, but social skills.

if sucking air through fucked up teeth counts as a social skill, the japanese are fucking masters.

Communication? What, you don't agree with me? Your next post will be the mail room...... Yea, Japan.

I suspect that there is a misconception among (western) gaijin. Like they think, they have a say in anyting or anyone would be interested in their opinion? No matter, how much is mumbled about "consensus" and such in Japan, we are all dry-nosed primates and management has always and everywhere worked the same way it still works now and everywhere amongst humans, chimps and other apes: Überdog barks order at underdog; underdog executes order and gets paid - or maybe shot. No need for social skills; so just relax, managment is easy

Shouting orders at underdogs is probably the right management style for simple-minded workers, but it ain't working for more intellect-based employers.

BTW, who does not remember all those books in the bubble years praising the skills of Japanese managers?

That works great if you're a factory worker...but if you're a skilled/experienced/capable "underdog" that has some passion and desire to contribute some value/success/etc. to whatever the company does, the Überdog would be stupid not to hear you out.

True in a perfect world of common sense, but the fight for territory, females, food, power (money) is still much deeper engraved into our dinosaur brains than we'd like to believe IMO. The barking just gets more subtle, where a job's skillset gets more complex and underdog gets not only exploited for their manual but also for their intellectual skills.

OK, potential for that cannot be ignored but let's not forget the far too common reasons the wrong Überdogs get put in place in Japan. Seniority, amakudari, face saving, personal friends of the people higher up?

I think western companies are still envious of the Japanese managers albeit for entirely different reasons: the lack of regulatory oversight which allows cartels and bid rigging to flourish, poorly enforced or non existent labour, consumer and environmental laws, civil courts which are stacked in favour of corporations over individuals, toothless unions and a ovine workforce quite willing to work overtime for free. The average Japanese manager can evade responsiblity in a way most western executives can only dream about.

OTOH, Lee Iacocca's books from the 1980ies made a lot of sense to me back then (aside from his cockiness), comparing the really good J-cars of those days to EU/USA-buckets. Nowadays, though, not that much of a difference any more I guess.
