In my experience, the average 50 year old Japanese office dude has the same management skill as a 28 year old American or Brit.

In my experience, quite a few Japanese lack communication skills for management, especially when FGs are among the managed. I am not talking about language skills, but social skills.

I suspect that there is a misconception among (western) gaijin. Like they think, they have a say in anyting or anyone would be interested in their opinion? That works great if you're a factory worker...but if you're a skilled/experienced/capable "underdog" that has some passion and desire to contribute some value/success/etc. to whatever the company does, the Überdog would be stupid not to hear you out.

OK, potential for that cannot be ignored but let's not forget the far too common reasons the wrong Überdogs get put in place in Japan. Seniority, amakudari, face saving, personal friends of the people higher up?

I think western companies are still envious of the Japanese managers albeit for entirely different reasons: the lack of regulatory oversight which allows cartels and bid rigging to flourish, poorly enforced or non existent labour, consumer and environmental laws, civil courts which are stacked in favour of corporations over individuals, toothless unions and a ovine workforce quite willing to work overtime for free. The average Japanese manager can evade responsiblity in a way most western executives can only dream about.

OTOH, Lee Iacocca's books from the 1980ies made a lot of sense to me back then (aside from his cockiness), comparing the really good J-cars of those days to EU/USA-buckets. Nowadays, though, not that much of a difference any more I guess.
