Still ghoulish given the thread. Poor kid.

Oooh. Took his wife's name too, it seems. He doesn't look as douchey as Koroshi Gumo, but he may end the same.

So are we assuming it's a rape/murder? or hit/dump/run?

Checking the GPS of her phone seems plausible but located him based on "traffic of cars in the area" means what? Video of cars in the area at the time?

The White House press sec said (I heard secondhand) thaf the US position is he took J-citizenship and was a local hire thru a J-agency, so they sympathize but cannot be responsible for J-crime.

If true, I wonder if he actually still had his US citizenship or if we're just witnessing more "awesome" J-reporting.

Naturally I could be wrong, but I highly doubt that Kenneth Gadson/Shinzato naturalized as a Japanese citizen.. it's far more likely he's done as others have as foreigners marrying Japanese - and simply taken his Japanese wife's name. In order to do that, naturalization isn't necessary.

Other press reports from last night have indicated he may have tried killing himself with large doses of sleeping pills and booze... and/or he may have been abusing those drugs/medications before the incident (which may have contributed to his poor decisionmaking/perversion).

It's kind of funny ... the Japanese press conventions when dealing with legal pseudonyms or previous names & identities ... it seems to be if and only the suspect or subject is ethnic Korean, whether it's a strictly defined convention or not ... they are in almost all cases loathe to reveal it. For example, in the Lucy Blackman case, it was Blackman's family and the British press who clarified that Joji Obara's original name was Kim Sung Jong and a naturalized Japanese citizen; if it had been left to the Japanese press, none of this probably would have ever come out (except on 2ch or in the tabloids).

Or...........is it chicken and egg? I have known Havill online for quite a while now, possibly before he naturalised, and he has always been a loveable screwball. And nobody sane could argue that He of the Northern Hot Springs and Hostess Bars went batty afterwards. He was obviously a douchebag from long before first contact. Indeed, I can only think of one person I know of about 10 that was identifiably normal and naturalised for reasons Spock would have approved. Fortunately, we have him on here.

Anyways, the sadness continues, but it's nice to know he won't be able to skate like Gumo.

I doubt he is naturalized either. I think it was just local gossip/bad reporting regarding his use of his wife's last name. The wife's parents' house in Yonabaru Town has been splashed all over the news. That poor family. They were sharing the house with their daughter and her American husband and the kids. The only thing I could find searching the Net was that John Dolan, commander of USFJ stated that the man was a local hire, meaning a Japanese hiring agency was involved. Since he is not a US military employee (technically an employed of the haken gaisha), they are disavowing responsibility for his actions.

Have they actually come out and said he raped her or what she died of? Even if rape is the default in these cases, with her jogging and him being in a car (and possibly high?) there is potential for a less rapey, vehicular death scenario.

As to his nationality, wouldn't it be weird for him to go through a local agency for a civilian position on the base if he was a US citizen? Most of the base job listings I've seen can be applied for without the need of agency if you're a US citizen. Particularly the ones that require background checks/clearance/etc.

A civilian U.S. base worker under arrest on suspicion of dumping the body of a 20-year-old woman in Okinawa Prefecture has admitted to killing her, investigative sources said Friday.

Kenneth Franklin Shinzato, a former Marine who works at the U.S. Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, told police he throttled and stabbed Rina Shimabukuro, an office worker from Uruma, the sources said.

Police will conduct an autopsy to identify the cause of the woman’s death, with an eye to building a murder case against Shinzato, according to the sources.

Shinzato, 32, admitted to dumping Shimabukuro’s body in a wooded area after she stopped moving, they said. Her corpse was found in the undergrowth in the village of Onna, north of Uruma...

I wouldn't say Gumo has skated just yet. He still has to go to trial, and his charge is the same "suspicion of abandoning her body."
Whether or not this Franklin guy's initial alleged murder self-confession sticks around as far as the trial is another story...

In the comments from above....

Just to clarify, the suspect is not "half", he's a US citizen, prior Marine, who separated and left Japan with his Okinawan wife. He reentered Japan and received a resident card and used his wife's last name. He applied for a job with a US contractor based out of Kadena but works primarily on Marine bases.

He should not have received SOFA status as he already had a Japan alien registration card, but somehow received it anyway.

He was questioned as his car was seen in the area, and during this initial questioning, acted suspiciously and was deceptive to several questions. When called back for questioning yesterday, confessed to taking the women's body and hiding it. I'm unsure if he confessed to a hit and run or some other admission regarding how the woman died.

Very, very tragic.

Also, like the whole "Abe is gonna have words with Obama over this!" sentiment

i dont intend to cover up for the dude. but......
native okinawa ppl's crime rate is more than twice as high as the crime rate of US mil guys there.
who is more dangerous for okinawa natives is okinawan themselves, NOT US mil guys.
its not too much to say this fact over and over.

Ah, I see now it being reported that Dolan said that Kenneth Franklin Shinzato is not working for the US military (merely a company that is based on Kadena and contracts services to the military). That's what has the locals impressed with his sensitivity. The it was previously reported it seemed to be suggesting he was working for a employment agency, but that is not the case.

I just meant compared to the murder charge he should be facing. That is a fucking travesty in MYHOMO. Even if not convicted he would be in the court of public opinion just for having being so charged. Going with the lesser charge makes it sound like he forgot to renew his Shaken in time. Unless there is some serious legal or diplomatic reason not to proceed with murder or at least manslaughter charges the prosecutors look like spineless assholes here.

Anyways, back to Koroshi Kennef...............

Matsuki,
If the bases weren't there he would never have been either. It's still basically a base incident...at the base of it, given how base his actions were.

That seems to be the basic assumption here but allow me to assume something based on that comment I posted....his wife is Japanese and they moved back to Okinawa to live with her family. A decision not necessarily based on the base's existence.

its a super very excellent number of incidents. at least outside the base, US mil guys crime rate is less than half of native okinawan ppls crime rate, as i said above.

犯罪ゼロが「良き隣人」の最低限の条件である。それができなければ、沖縄にいる資格はない。

"the minimum requirement of the "good Samaritan" is that the number of incidents is 0. otherwise they dont deserve to be in okinawa."
it is fucking totally IMPOSSIBLE. this article has logical leapings everywhere just like chinese or korean medias article writing about japan. it seems like native okinawan medias already were taken over by chinese espionage activities :shake:

He was unemployable anywhere in Japan but a military base.
