Hawg!!

That thing is just a 65-round-per-second cannon with wings. The rumour is that the gun recoil is so powerful it slows the plane down, which is why they have to keep the bursts short (not true, but a cool story).

Can't wait for the Olympic Warthog shootout event.

With only 1/10 and 1/4 of the populaton of the states and Japan, respectively, and respectfully, of course, has anybody else noticed Canada cleaning up in the Bronze medal category: 1/3 as many as the US and 1/2 as many as Japan. Eat that imperialist and ex-imperialist oinkdogs!!! And we still have the Women's soccer consolation game coming up, and probably a few more sports we do decently enough at. This might be the year we show the world how cool shambolic mediocrity can be.

Well, Canada does have the same number of medals as the Netherlands at the moment. Not bad for a country with twice the population.

And did anyone notice the Brits? Outdoing China is no small feat.

I always find it so interesting how Japanese medal winners seem to race back to japan as soon as possible. Don't they want to stay , relax and enjoy the closing ceremonies? No I guess they want to cash in if they can. Do other athletes do the same or is this something unique to Japan?

It is quite a pleasant shock. I can't imagine it will continue like that to the end but to keep it up for nearly a week is quite something. I am surrounded by conspiracy theories - The athletes aren't really Brits but defectors after 2012 that have been given nationality, doping ....

Maybe China has stopped using doping, so that the playing field is now more level...

Quite simple - now that British athletes are no longer under the Brussels Jackboot of the European Superstate, their true potential is unfolding.

Aaaaah, double dutching it are we? This makes my heart soar. I have always got a sense that Netherlanders enjoy embracing a sort of comfortable mediocrity like we do, which is to say, we have our priorities straight. BTW, since this is the Summer Olympics is it not a competitive advantage for you guys, with your long tropical summers? :biggrin2:

As for the Jpn athletes scurrying home, it may also have to do with accommodation and facilities logistics as arranged by the IOC and the JOC. I remember something like that at Vancouver 2010. I find it weird too, though. You would think they would want to trade their little ping pong shoes for thongs and go for a walk on the beach.

Knowing how things tend to work here this makes more sense. The athletes are not the bosses of the Japanese delegation and once their event is over they have outlived their usefulness, same procedure as any J-company. I bet the old guys that are in charge will be in Brazil weeks after the para-olympics are over blowing coke and banging strippers. Why do you think that governor guy wanted to go so bad?

I read today that Phelps is already home too.

So is another U.S. swimmer who was part of a 4-person group of U.S. swimmers who are wanted by the Brazil cops for filing a false robbery report. Two of those have been prevented from leaving Brazil.

So, I guess it is normal in other countries too...

Now that the Olympics are almost over I'd have to say the coverage has improved considerably. The first few days were just awful, and the media people must have got the memo because things started getting more balanced about halfway through. Much better.

But then ... you still have bronze and silver medal winners crying like babies because they didn't get gold. That's just undignified for an Olympic athlete, or any sportsman for that matter, but it does seem to be a growing trend, especially in combat sports like judo and wrestling.

At least the coverage improved. I think what might have happened, in addition to a nudge or two from people who noticed how atrocious it was in the beginning, is that people started loosening up after it was clear that Japan was actually going to win a few medals, and no longer felt a need to focus intently on every tiny victory or hint that a victory might be in the offing.

Saori Yoshida fell to an American.

American wrestler Helen Maroulis wins historic Olympic gold

United States wrestler Helen Maroulis made history in Rio de Janeiro Thursday, becoming the first American woman to win an Olympic wrestling gold medal.

Maroulis upset three-time Olympic gold medalist Saori Yoshida of Japan in the freestyle wrestling 53-kilogram gold medal match. Yoshida had won the 55-kilogram division in 2004, 2008 and 2012, but was beaten 4-1 by Maroulis in the 53-kg final Thursday (Weight classes were rearranged before the 2016 Games).

Japan has dominated women’s wrestling since it was introduced as an Olympic sport in 2004. In the flyweight, lightweight and middleweight divisions, it had claimed seven of the nine available gold medals. In the two events it didn’t win, a Japanese wrestler finished second.

Yoshida, 33, who now has three Olympic golds and a silver, is the winningest wrestler in history, male or female. She has won 13 gold medals at the World Championships.

It's on TV daily, sports or not...so it must be part of the new "Japaneeeese culture." Just wait til it's the new fashion trend....

Yoshida, 33, who now has three Olympic golds and a silver, is the winningest wrestler in history, male or female. She has won 13 gold medals at the World Championships.

But she was in tears after falling to Maroulis. She was even inconsolable while receiving her silver medal on the podium.

...but yeah, this is pretty embarrassing and undignified when the spotlight on the podium isn't the winner....

Having a cousin who used to bawl her eyes out when she got 97% in a test, I have a feeling that it is part of what drives some of these championship level people -- and that they wouldn't be where they were if they didn't have that drive. They are certainly not balanced, happy people, that is for sure.

Definitely a part of it...but one must note we don't see nearly as many athletes from other countries doing the same. As to not being happy/balanced, the whole Yoshida and her slave driving father story constantly being portrayed as a heartwarming family tale is bizarre to me. Don't know anything about Helen Maroulis but taking a guess based on her bio info, she seems to just have genuine passion for the sport whereas I think Yoshida has/had serious daddy issues driving her to success.

:keyboardcoffee: Yep. Saori comes from a small town very near where I live. I have met people who know the family quite well. If what you allege is true, I have never heard any whisper of it. You may know better of course, but I have my doubts..

I was referring to the story they've televised about 30 times in the last few days. If they're not actually like that, it's awesome, what's shown on the boobtube is pretty terrible though.

Trouble is you are saying he is guilty of child abuse and she is psychologically scarred for life by only being interested in the sport because she had to please daddy. I don't think you can judge that from the information you have and from what I have heard yes, he was certainly a very determined coach but actually she wanted that and did have a genuine passion for the sport. In any case he died two years ago FTR. What's a bit iffy is the fact that the Japanese public seemed to just expect that she would get gold yet again. This is her fourth Olympics. After 12 years at the very top of a sport like that it's not at all unreasonable that someone younger and better comes along.

Like I said above, if it's not the case, awesome....but the latest TV rendition of the story has her as a child, sobbing and declaring her hate for her father for he would give her nothing but harsh words and his stick...saying only her mother's embrace could bring her comfort. It indeed paints a picture of child abuse and psychological scarring with daddy trying to relive his passion through her at any expense. Accurate or not, it's a pretty bizarre story to blast on TV as a peek into an Olympic athlete's family life. Of course there's that new young table tennis champion that has a similar overbearing parent (mother in that instance) pushing a child beyond reason and preventing them from having a normal childhood for their own passion....but because the athlete is now older and grateful, it's all ok?
