Sagawa's diabetes is pretty bad and he's pretty much penniless, so I doubt very much that he's hanging around Roppongi.

But the more chilling fact is that we're all paying for him with our taxes.

British TV producer Visual Voodoo produced an hour long documentary on Sagawa as part of a short series on cannibal killers. It was shown on Channel 5 in the UK last night. Morally, it was a very dubious proposition since Sagawa featured heavily which means, as Marvin pointed out, that they must have paid him.

They shot film of him in Shinjuku and also back in his apartment. He mostly spoke in English but decided to speak in Japanese when talking directly about the murder. The programme showed the outside of his apartment block. While it looks fairly standard, I would imagine any local would be able to identify it.

Inside, he had posters of Japanese idols like Aya Ueto on the wall of his bedroom and said that he has decided now that Japanese girls are more beautiful than westerners. He showed interviewers some pictures of foreign hostesses he says he took to Finland. He claims to have frequented foreign hostess bars when he returned to Japan and spent all his money on taking them out which eventually bankrupted him.

The programme makers got him to agree (i.e. paid him) to see a criminal psychologist. They chose Susumu Oda who regularly turns up on TV and is quoted fairly often in the press. Oda's judgement was that Sagawa doesn't appear to regret his actions, is a "sexual psycopath" and medically, if not legally, should have been committed to a mental health institution when he returned to Japan.

In the end, the documentary wasn't very clear on who to blame for the fact Sagawa is walking around. The French police, prosecution staff and journalists interviews seemed to think his French lawyer had pulled a fast one with the government. At the same time, they could not work out why the Japanese government would be happy to have a self-confessed killer free on their streets. There were no interviews with anyone from Japanese officialdom so there is no way of knowing whether he is under any kind of surveillance or what they had agreed with French authorities. His story that he took some girls to Finland, if true, suggests he had a passport at least at that time.

Dave Spector was also on the programme to comment on the Japanese media's fascination with Sagawa. He pointed out that Sagawa is not nearly as popular in Japan as it might seem from overseas but conceded that there were people with a fetish for white girls who were fascinated by his actions. He thought that the passing of time had somehow made the true horror of what Sagawa had done more abstract.

When he talked about being obsessed by the white woman, it did bring someone to mind...but now Sagawa says he's in to Japanese girls.

Was really wierd seeing Dave Spector speaking English.....

Marvin, please, are you sure of this? I am less than 500 meters from that apartment..

You know, there are always some 'yasashii' Obasan like to chat with you especially when you have small kid with you, but hardly from any Ojisan, but there was once, an ojisan roaming around the park trying to be friendly with my son, I remembered I just felt very uneasy instantly and try to be away from him with my kid, after that I saw him approach other kid. It was a quiet morning with just 3-4 pairs of moms and kids and you can see him actually walk up to every kid and chat. I can't explain exactly why here but I was really scared of him, he just behaved very unnatural. I can't really remember his feature anymore but I remember he was in his 50's , and is quite a short guy... This park guy I mentioned may not be him, but I really ought to be very careful if he is living nearby. I don't care if he has sworn he won't kill anymore..goodness, that is really scarry to know he is iving close by.

But as posted, I always consider these ojisan-tachi questionable until proven otherwise. It is always better to error on the safe side, than to be sorry later. You can never be too safe.

Having said that, not everybody is a perv. Japanese older men and women love children. They will go out of their way to talk and/or play with younger children even more than we might in the same instance, But, where it may be only this perfectly natural fondness on their part, it doesn't hurt to keep an eye open.

Yes, if I am not wrong Marvin said Sagawa live close to Ichihashi, and Ichihashi's apartment is about 300 (not 500) meters form me. Living on the ground level apartment and having my husband working outstation now probably makes me feel insecure. Oh thank you, I actually lock and latch everything day and night. This morning I checked the NTT phone directory but couldn't find his name, so he probably don't have a NTT phone or don't have it listed. Who knows, he had been craving for 'that meat' for 20+(?) years and may think a small kid is just the right size for him and easier to handle later..eewwe..ok, that is just my imagination..

I know some are just plain friendly. This Ojisan (pic) appear very often in the park, and always offer balloons to kids, I don't allow my son to accept balloon from him, but I am not scared of him either, not like the one I mentioned earlier, like SJ said, I follow my instinct, stay away from him.

I believe many of these psycho were once an abused child, but like Ichihashi and Sagawa's case, they have/ had wealthy, educated parents and they are intelligent people themselves. What went wrong? Were they abused before too but just that they didn't admit? There are many articles about Sagawa mentioning about his strong memory about the childhood's story that demons eating little children, and all his fantasies started from there, I wonder how true is that.
