A clause in the International Whaling Commission's 1986 ban on commercial whaling allows Japan to kill almost 1,000 whales each year for what it calls "scientific research".

Japaneeeeeeze ruuuphooo

Sea Shepherd Supports China Environmental Destruction of Senkakus

It would be a tragedy to marine life to allow Japan to continue to control the Senkaku Diaoyu Tiaoyu Islands in the East China Sea. In light of the ongoing slaughter of dolphins in Taiji, Japan and the continued killing of whales by Japan in the Southern Ocean, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society wishes to support Chinese efforts to assert sovereignty over the islands known as the Diaoyu Islands by China and the Tiaoyu Islands by Taiwan.

No environmental group worth its salt (or saltwater in this case) could possibly justify supporting China for environmental reasons....do those fucking idiots realize that Chinese are possibly already even more rapacious on the environment than the Japanese, including marine life?

By extension we might wonder if there was an element of racism in their campaign against Japan.

Just as we call tuna "sea chicken" I propose we rename whales as "sea pigs"

The Grauniad wrote:Meet the woman battling Japan's whaling fleet in Antarctic ocean

Japanese hunters won't kill a single whale this winter, Sea Shepherd activists vow

One of Natalie Fox's most cherished memories is of kayaking just off the coast of America accompanied by inquisitive blue whales. They came to "hang out with us for two hours", said Fox, a 30-year-old environmental activist, originally from Cornwall. "The more time you spend with them in the ocean, the more you realise how special they are."

Now Fox, a co-founder of the campaigning group Women for Whales, is to be a key player in the Sea Shepherd conservation society's Operation Zero Tolerance. In its biggest venture to date, the society will soon be sending four ships to take on the Japanese whaling fleet in the Southern Ocean with the aim of preventing the death of even a single whale.

Almost three months ago, Fox, a surfing and yoga instructor, was summoned to Hobart, Australia. She was responding to an email that read: "There's a spot for you, but you've got to come, now! To Australia. Right away. And you're undercover, so you can't tell anyone."

Fox is aware that the operation will be a challenging one, especially since she is prone to seasickness. The icy conditions of the Southern Ocean whale sanctuary – ideal for minke and fin whales but inhospitable for humans – will be a test, although the chance to see icebergs at close quarters, she said, will be priceless. However, she will be spending most of her time cooking, in the galley of the Sam Simon, Sea Shepherd's newest vessel.

She is putting potential confrontations out of her mind. "I can't think about it until I'm in the moment or it's happening at that time, and hope that whatever happens, it's all good," she said.

On the bright side, at least it wasn't 18,000 Tiger/Rhino/Horse/ETC penii drying out up there. At least shark fin soup is tasty...the "ancient" Chinese "tradition" of eating animal penii doesn't seem to be working.

So let's get this straight. You can get a naive, worshipful, bleach-blonde yoga instructor to live with you on a boat, and do the cooking, for no pay, and she bought her own air ticket to get to you?

Exchange pirate scow for luxury yacht, and head for warmer waters, and you've basically got every man's retirement fantasy. I wanna be an eco-pirate king!

I really can't figure out the purpose of this guy's efforts on twitter etc. It seems he is just trying to gather as many friends and followers as possible and then analysing how fantastic he is at creating a cult. But what is missing is the substance of the content he puts out there.

Surely it is better to have followers based on a purpose rather than just for the sake of having followers?

What am I missing?

The purpose is to leveragify the crowd-sourced peer-to-peer social networking cloud of self-congratulatory inspirational twitter.

You're missing the jerky video tour of the rabbit hutch.

I've read though some of his tweets etc and it is all just verbal geri.

No substance at all. Just noise with some lame and cliche "inspirational" quotes and something incoherent about dolphins. Reminds me a mutual love-fest wanking session with people with way too much time on their hands. Anybody who doesn't spread the love is a hater.

A hater with more patience than me. But not as much patience as those folk waiting for the return of their "free M氣T from gulag" donations. I will happily retract this comment if provided with evidence to the contrary (overwhelming evidence of course).

I did learn one thing reading his twitter feed. And that is how many ranking and reputation tools there are to show you in graphical format how fabulous you are on social media sites. It shows how people can rise to the top of the charts with no talent, no substance and no content just by having lots of followers.

Kinda like J-pop.

This started in America, after producing famous people whom were famous for being famous. Paris Hilton, the girl with the big ass, etc.

All they need to do is make kawaii Sea Shepard goods and make a preteen girl group sing songs about kawaii dolphins and whales and before they know it, they'll have the Japanese on board....

Nice try but how many aquariums have I been to in Japan that serve sushi in the restaurants. The logical connections are just not made. Activism is really not the norm here.

I will say however, that the biggest cultural sea change I have ever witnessed in my 13 years here was at the daycares and the food supply post Fukushima. The mothers really organised themselves and demanded that the daycare their kid was enrolled in did NOT buy food from contaminated regions. Many many stories I heard where the daycare was forced to publish the source of all food and if it wasn't acceptable then the admin were ripped a new one. The daycare (one I heard of) was trying to use the excuse to the mothers that their veg supplier had been working with them for a long time and they didn't want to offend him by not buying the produce he was trying to sell them. The mothers basically said, screw the pride of the supplier, this is the health of our kids. I know at my kids daycare, they have a weekly notice of all the food that is purchased and the published radiation levels of each ingredient by an independent tester. So, it goes to show that if the subject is important enough, people will protest. You don't get hairy unwashed hippies protesting for protesting sake like in other countries.

So the lesson from this is that the environmentalists really need to educate and sell their causes to the regular folk before any change will happen. Most people just don't care enough or don't see a problem. Somebody coming in from overseas telling them what they should think just won't cut it.

A Japanese person will go to an aquarium, see a fish, and think oishisou.

I love seafood but never once have I seen a live fish and thought it looked delicious. Same goes for beef and a field full of cows.

Hahaha, ever watch the discovery channel with Japanese? Everything is oishisou or mazusou!

Right, but TIJ so you get their attention with the slutty/cute preteen girls and you try to make them believe the girls care about dolphins/whales while educating.

Speaking of educating them, I know far too many people here who eat sushi/fish almost daily. Particularly worrying is the children I see eating tuna everyday....same goes for the dolphin/whale meat but where is the warning parents about letting their children consume too much mercury laden tuna?

Agree.

On the other hand, with pigs I cannot suppress culinary fantasies. These animals are made to be cut to pieces and fried.
