I would say that Scott was in the wrong place at the wrong time and made an ass of himself with the wrong person...

This is a gaijin free-for-all site so you'll get a wide range of opinions.

For my own part, I've not only been with people like Scott, I've probably been Scott on occasion. Not only in Japan but in many cities around the world. Clubs want people to be drunk because they make money out of people with poor judgement. Bul-Lets is not a new bar; it has been around for a while and appeared in the English press almost as soon as it had opened so it certainly wasn't a private local bar. All bars have experience of guys they don't want and they generally get rid of them.

We have no way of knowing how Scott came across to other people in the bar but we can assume that Watanabe decided on the back of it to pick a fight with him on his own volition. We also know that he killed him. I cannot imagine any obnoxious behaviour by a foreigner that would have warranted such an overreaction and, thank god, it doesn't happen very often no matter what we might imagine the provocation to be.

When I posted the first news article, I was annoyed that it had sought to describe a culture of aggressive drunk foreigners threatening the peace of a local area. It annoyed me because I have seen TV programmes make fun of drunk salarymen - getting them to take part in quiz segments - without presenting them as a social hazard. I can't help but feel that Scott Tucker would have been refused entry, tolerated or quickly ushered to the exit if he had been objectionable and Japanese.

But we don't know. There are people on this forum who have said how they would punch the lights out of a Japanese guy who offended their Japanese girlfriend so what if it was the case that Watanabe took offence in the same way as some trigger-happy foreigners seem to think is appropriate? The lesson for all of us should be that no-one is entitled to take out someone else just because you think you are in the right. We all know that at the most this should have been a tussle no matter who was at fault. Everyone should have been able to walk away with no more than injured pride and maybe a bruise.

We have a thread on FG called Dead Gaijins. I've told some guys who know me here that if I'm unlucky enough to find an early end in Japan then they can post my sorry arse in that thread. However, I haven't put some of my friends there because, frankly, it hurt too much to think of them as a "dead gaijin" for me to do it. Reading how Livehouse says he just returned from the funeral is a sharp reminder to spend a moment paying respects to a guy I didn't know. Perhaps I wouldn't even have liked him had I met him but the way his life ended could have happened to a number of friends of mine. None of them would have deserved his fate no matter how they'd acted in that club.

cheers on a provoking and succinct post mulboyne.. the internet makes it easy to forget that these posts are from actual people, nice to read something that isnt overly reactionary or antagonistic.

Well put Mulboyne! There is always going to be the "well, he probably deserved it" crowd, as well as the "damn Japanese are getting away with this" group.

It is in deed a sad thing and something that could possibly happen to anyone who likes to lift the pints. Good food for thought. Where I think that people who drink should always remember there is a code of conduct in bars and pubs, but we can't forget that it is the nature of alcohol that ones judgement gets impaired, or in my case, you get shitface pissed. That is the time when you're most vulnerable to provocation, either against someone else or against yourself.

The old adage about you can't reason with, or in some cases even talk to a drunk is quite true. As we talk about it on the web, it is quite easy to say that if you go into a place and run into a belligerent drunk, just ignore him and/or leave.

But, in reality it don't work that way. When you're out with the mates and some drunk shows up and wants to argue or even pick a fight, you don't start trying to psychoanalyze him and figure out if his behavior was caused by a bad day at the office, or a tiff was his old lady. If you've had a few, you usually end up trying to rationalize with his arguments and maybe even fighting with him. Again, that's the nature of booze. It makes everybody an expert in any field you choose to argue, from the stock market to fisticuffs.

We all know at least one person who is a "bad drunk", or someone who just can't hold their alcohol. They probably shouldn't even drink, but it happens. I did not know Scott and obviously, what kind of a drinker he was. It remains a no-brainer that a person should not get killed for being pissed. It is true he could have provoked the incident that resulted in this, but I have also seen the "locals" gang up on an FG when an incident was occurring (not only Japan, but in other countries). As Take noted, we all gotta die sooner or later. Quite true, but later is always better than sooner! So we should take note that this can happen and govern our selves when we out drinking accordingly.

Even having realized and said all that, when some dude gets in my face in what I consider, "my pub", it can sometimes be very difficult to resist the urge to send him home wearing his asshole just above his necktie.

At any rate it, it was too bad about Scott. I will definitely lift one in his memory RIP.

A Flower child is a murderer and it is trivial for Japanese? I suggest you might want to consider an appointment for yourself and Jack...

What's your problem with this case? Just because a foreigner got killed it has to be front page news 24/7? And if it's not, that's because Japanese people think less of the life of a foreigner than they do of the Japanese? You guys are really fucked up.

What do you know about the case? Have you investigated the case? Do you know what happened? All you know is that a gaijin got killed byu a Japanese and your conclusions are solely based on your racism complex. All those who think the Japanese are throwing this case under the rug because it involves a gaijin victim can henceforth go fuck themselves.

TransWorld Airlines, also known as TWA. They used to serve a delicious brand of Ceylon tea on their international flights. They had an aggressive marketing campaign in the mid 1960's that advertized themselves as sophisticated and yet reasonably priced. The focussed, of course, on the stewardesses, usually there were two at a time who would go up to a passenger and say, "Would you like some of our TWA tea".
This eventually grew into people direclt asking for it, "I'd love to have some more of your TWA tea". and finally, it was shortened by some Madison Avenue ex to "More TWAT, please."

and lastly, get back on the anti-depressants, Jack. Remember, I heard about you from that girl Ta--a. Your got her e-mail rejecting your marriage proposal, right? How's job hunting? Sorry to hear about your brother.
