Who here remembers Sylark Gusto's Gourmet Gusto Burger before they took it off the menu about two years ago? Now that was about the best value for yen burger ever, and I sure as fuck have no idea why it was dropped. Now 500 yen buys you the Gusto Burger with fries, still a pretty good deal but...

Skylark has announced that it will be closing 200 restaurants around the country. The company operates family restaurants under the Skylark and Jonathan's names but the closures will mainly be focused on the Bamiyan and Yumean chains. Some will be converted to the low-priced Gusto chain. The move continues the firm's restructuring plan. In 2006, Skylark underwent a management buy-out funded by Nomura Principal Finance and Britain's CVC Capital Partners. The two owners have been unhappy with company president Kiwamu Yokokawa, a member of the original founding family, and have been attempting to remove him.

Looks like Nomura is looking to unload Skylark now.

U.S. private-equity firm Bain Capital LLC is in final talks to acquire Japanese restaurant-chain operator Skylark Co. from Nomura Holdings Inc. for as much as \260 billion ($3.4 billion) including debt, a person familiar with the matter said Wednesday.

The deal would be one of the largest acquisitions in Japan by a foreign investment firm since the global financial crisis in 2008, and is the latest in a series of buyouts that could help boost sentiment in the sluggish, shrinking private-equity market.

An agreement between Bain and Nomura's investment unit, Nomura Principal Finance Co., will likely be finalized later this month, the person said.
