Pilots and safety advocates say the situation doesn't make sense.

Actually... it does...

LiPo is most unstable when charged or discharged... But when they are just transported in a non-overcharged non-puffed state the risk is lesseneded.... (as long as no bozo perforate or shortcut them, but shortcut count as discharge with extreme prejudice anyway...).

Sidenote.... Taro i wuz hoping you made up that titul :-(...

They are LiCoO2 but should be LiMn or LiFe according to various sources.

"Japan Probe Finds Miswiring of Boeing 787 Battery"

Postby yanpa » Thu Feb 21, 2013 10:17 am

Japan Probe = a probe by Japan, not the eponymous website.
time.com wrote:Japan Probe Finds Miswiring of Boeing 787 Battery

TOKYO — A probe into the overheating of a lithium ion battery in an All Nippon Airways Boeing 787 that made an emergency landing found it was improperly wired, Japan’s Transport Ministry said Wednesday.

The Transport Safety Board said in a report that the battery for the aircraft’s auxiliary power unit was incorrectly connected to the main battery that overheated, although a protective valve would have prevented power from the auxiliary unit from causing damage.

Flickering of the plane’s tail and wing lights after it landed and the fact the main battery was switched off led the investigators to conclude there was an abnormal current traveling from the auxiliary power unit due to miswiring.

Wait just spent 30minutes checking, it's the apu batt that burned, what is this 'main battery' stuff...

This explanation is a little too muddy to make sense...

Some Boing talky head wrote:But a venting cell, a protective measure that kicks in when a battery cell begins to fail and prevents internal pressure and temperatures from getting too high, does not a thermal runaway make, says Boeing.

Yea, the same way a car explode to avoid spilling too much unburned fuel on the road while on fire...

Moarr... (of the same)

(If you battery is puffed and need to "vent" she's already beyond that safepoint where using it is just waiting for disaster: puff=dead it's not a fixable condition)

‘Sake Toast’ for First United Denver-Tokyo Boeing 787 Flight

United Airlines inaugurated Boeing 787 Dreamliner flights from Denver to Tokyo on Monday, marking the Mile High City's first nonstop service to Asia.

Passengers were treated to a Japanese drum ceremony at the gate, along with cake and a sake toast prior to boarding. The flight pushed back a few minutes ahead of schedule and taxied to the runway with a water cannon salute sendoff.

The daily flight to Tokyo's Narita International Airport was originally scheduled to begin March 31, but was delayed because of the worldwide grounding of all Boeing 787s over concerns about the safety of its battery system.

United 787 heading to Tokyo diverted to Seattle

An indication of an oil filter problem prompted the crew of a Boeing 787 flying from Denver to Tokyo to divert to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Tuesday afternoon, a United Airlines spokeswoman said.
Flight 139 landed normally and an airline maintenance team was inspecting it, United spokeswoman Mary Ryan said in an email statement.
The plane touched down in Seattle shortly after 4 p.m., a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said.
United just put its 787s back in the air May 20 after smoldering batteries on two 787s owned by other airlines prompted authorities to ground the planes in January.
In her statement, the United spokeswoman said the crew decided to land in Seattle because of "an indication of a problem with an oil filter."
The airline was providing customers with motel rooms and planned to fly them to Tokyo on Wednesday, Ryan said.
The plane carried about 200 passengers.
Asked whether the latest 787 issue raised any concerns with United after the recent battery issue, the spokeswoman said she did not immediately have any additional information.

Do they still have operators? I thought passenger planes were essentially all computer controlled nowadays.

FWIW, the flight history for the plane in question indicates its preceding flight was to/from Kansai Airport.

No, but it's a prank from a summer intern at the NTSB.

I'm not sure that is the full story. Here is the TV channel's apology (and I would have hoped that those names would have rung some bells in the more Asian-diversity-aware San Francisco Bay area, but I suppose we are talking about Oakland). It is not entirely clear where they got the names from at first. They say that they rang the National Transportation Safety Board to verify the names, only spelling them out. The person who they got through to when they called who verified the information was the summer intern, but they don't state in unequivocal words who the source is (unless it is standard procedure for a Fox News affiliate to "verify" by confirming with the source only.) Note that they say their mistake was was not getting the name, rank and serial number of the NTSB drone, not that their mistake was in verifying insufficiently per se.
