Just where are you meeting these lovelies? I think you need a better dating app

It's just one that I actually dated, in particular, that was otherwise pretty amazing. (the rest were either friends of friends or teammates wives) She didn't do it initially either...false advertising? I could ignore it for the most part (don't look) but instead of the usual lip smacking when eating, while she held her mouth closed, I could hear teeth on teeth chomping as she chewed. Never had that one before...you'd think it hurt or would grind down her teeth? ....it's like fingernails on a chalkboard for me.

Because eating like a dog makes it taste better?

exactly

and in my personal impression, the reason ppl have a illusion that j-hospitality is superb is that there are 2 or 3 unspeakably rude countries just next to this island. to be exact, c, k and r of the capital letter.

Didn't I say that firstest? I don't really care, but dibs anyways. It's like watching peasants try to drive. Which for the record, in seriosuly underpopulated places is hilariously cute. It's called Reverse. It helps. Plus, 4 big men can lift a fully loaded Kei-Tora. Easily.

We went to an onsen last weekend – arriving at about 1pm for a 3pm check-in time, and expecting to have to wait. We were pleasantly surprised to be checked in and given our room immediately. So it can go both ways….

Definitely depends on the place, usually you can have some fun with the hard-headed idiots by making them hold your luggage....go to the restroom, then come out and say you need to take something out/put something in your luggage. When the checkout time is 11 or 12 firm...I've never understood their boner for knowing exactly what time you will arrive or trying to hold you to it. As has already been said, it comes across as "for THEIR convenience" rather than great customer service. (even then, unless it's a small mom and pop place, it doesn't seem like it will be of much benefit for them)

But the point is it should always go that way if the room is ready.

Some hotels allow you to check in early or check out later, but only at additional payment.

Toyoko Inn charges 1080 Yen for every hour you check out later than 10:00 AM.

I would tend to agree - so was trying to surmise cases where that might not hold true, from the perspective of the hotel. I came up with two... Of course these are still not omotenashi from the perspective of the guest.

Where the hotel was concerned with `fairness` - and having to say `no` to an early arriver, making them wait - and possibly have them see another party get a different room early, even though they were still waiting for theirs.

And...

Where some rooms on the same floor were ready, and others not ready - with the hotel/cleaning staff wanting exclusive hallway use as they wrap up their duties.

Those are both good reasons, and the first one certainly plays to a concern for broader customer sentiment, especially given how powerful an obsession Fairness and Equal Treatment can be with so many Japanese (unless they are on the plus side of the equation, strangely enough  ). Look how hinky lots of men get over preferential treatment and marketing campaigns for women.

I also buy the second one; that seems a perfectly legitimate need on the business' part. I would also add 1 1/2 more: simply because Those are The Rules, and That is The Way It's Done. Japanese customers' appraisals of Japanese service seem to rise or fall based on the flowery lip service alone, and their criticisms of customer oriented North American style service echo that concern. You could fix a problem, build them a custom hotel suite from scratch, or accommodate almost any idiotic request imaginable but if you don't start with Irrashaimase and end it with Makoto ni blah blah blah they simply won't be impressed.

Update on the Henn na Hotel in Sasebo, the one staffed by robots, which is mentioned earlier in this thread.

Things aren't going so well.

The Wall Street Journal [paywalled] has reported that the room doll [that's right, the one you had to use to switch off the light because there were no wall switches] interpreted snoring as a request it couldn’t understand, waking guests continually through the night to rephrase.

...

“The two robot luggage carriers are out of use because they can reach only about two dozen of the more than 100 rooms in the hotel. They can travel only on flat surfaces and could malfunction if they get wet going outside to annex buildings,” the paper reported. “They were really slow and noisy, and would get stuck trying to go past each other,” lamented one guest.

Bwahahahahahahaha, meanwhile back in the real world where "robots" are more than a thin bullshit veneer for marketing a hotel/country/culture/jingoism/etc...

The Japanese should keep grounded with the current trend of selling porn and toilets to the world....and create a self cleaning sexbot.

DANG, it really pains me to say things in support of Japan, but DARPA and the US military have been dumping giga-tons of money into killer "real-world" robots for more than a decade, which make Japan's pathetic attempts look totally lame.

No doubt, it's just so silly watching Japan cling to and buy into it's own roboto imeeeeji when it's nowhere near reality. It's spray painting the grass green on another level.

Meanwhile Macron & Trump are so politically handicapped they can't or won't protest the luring of their citizens to Japan for arrest. Even the Philippines knows to follow proper procedure.

What irks me is how many of the locals around me are drinking the green tea kool-aid about Ghosn being guilty of something...though they're not really able to explain of what...just parrot the same "maybe overseas what he did is not a crime but this is Japan and shoganai."
