AFAIK women can't get refills without going back to the OB/GYN every month or two. Even though the pill was finally legalized, it has been made so inconvenient that it has not gained wide use.

Unfortunately that's true of any prescription medication in Japan.

I've heard the low-dose pill used in the West these days is not commonly prescribed here. Perhaps Coligny or Catone could shed some light on that?

It's available (that's the one that took 30-odd years to get approval), but not commonly prescribed, though easy to do so if the woman asks for it.

Mostly because -pills- are not commonly prescribed. But the waiting room here still have commercials for low dose pills on the walls... Which give you some clue aboot how business savyy dadinlaw is... (it was private maternity clinic... he can put Mercobenz commercials if he want...)

For the prescription period... recomendation are every 3 month... but it can be a yearly affair... (even if like for dentist visit... it's not exactly smart...) It's more a matter of communication with your obgyn/pathology than regulation...

I aint no gynecologist (even if I can still have a look if you want) and
Japan can be diabolized with reason for a lot of things... But aside from the ridiculous mosaic-pr0n. For seks/pregnancy/contraception/abortion the worries are to be put against incompetence... not regulation... (at least seen from inside).
