Vendor held for selling pirated DVDs
A 35-year-old street vendor was arrested in Hyogo Prefecture on Monday on suspicion of selling pirated DVDs, police said.
Shigeyoshi Oshio, of Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, was arrested on suspicion of violating the copyright law. Police seized more than 1,000 pirated DVDs, including 300 copies of the recently released animated film "Howl's Moving Castle," directed by Hayao Miyazaki.
Oshio sold the DVDs at a roadside stall in Nishinomiya in the prefecture. Other titles available included "Spider-Man 2." The discs could be bought for 1,000 yen each or 1,500 yen for two, the police said.
Among the DVDs, 50 titles have yet to be released in Japan, the police said.
The DVDs were apparently made by copying other products or secretly recording movies with a video camera from within cinemas, they said.
