40-ton rice paddy ontop a crap-concrete condo!

Postby Taro Toporific » Wed Jan 12, 2005 12:23 pm

Ohhhh yeah baby! Let's put a 40-ton rice paddy ontop a crap-concrete condo in the world's greatest earthquake danger zone. R-i-i-i-i-ght.
POINT OF VIEW/ Hajime Koshimizu: Use rooftop rice paddies to cool environment
Asahi Shimbun.(IHT/Asahi: January 12,2005)
....I wish to propose the planting of rice on rooftops. Creating rice paddies on top of buildings is possible given Japan's advanced waterproof technology.
Rooftop rice paddies offer children in the neighborhood a chance to acquaint themselves with rice planting and harvesting. Adult urban residents can also feast their eyes on verdant rice without leaving the city. The important thing is to change the drab cityscape to a greener one....more...

Actually rooftop gardens are good (not sure about waterlogged rice paddies though). They provide natural insulation, absorb runoff, and help clean the air. The new Seattle City Hall has one. It actually just looks like a field of grass and weeds.

I agree. I remember reading an article a couple of years ago about a building that had created a wetland on top and was raving about how they had dramatically reduced the cost of, and stabilised, their air conditioning (mainly for the top floor) and had also attracted native birds back to the area.

Although this isn't it, here is a similar article from Korea.

That would describe more than 99% of the yards in Seattle.

Personally, I think gardens and the like are a good idea, but like a few others, I don't know about a rice paddy. I think that it might be a bad idea to add a tanbo to an existing building, but there is no reason to think buildings with designed with one in mind would be unsafe.

KIPPO: Rooftop greening by using microorganism developed
Kansai Electric Power Co., Ltd. and Osaka Gas Co., Ltd. have announced that they had jointly developed new technology to cover rooftops of buildings with grass and trees by utilizing symbiotic microorganism in their possession. Rooftop greening is said to be effective to reduce temperatures in cities. Thus far, soil as thick as anywhere from 15 centimeters to 40 centimeters was considered necessary for planting grass and trees on rooftops so as to fully spread their roots in soil. The two companies said their newly developed technology will help trees and grass previously regarded as difficult to grow on the upper surface of a roof with the soil as thin as 10 centimeters to develop steadily.
Problems such as reinforcing building rooftops to enable them to stand for a heavy load of weight have blocked popularization of rooftop greening. The two companies said load reinforcement construction is no longer necessary.

Let's think about this for a tick. Rooftop wetlands and/or rice paddies produce large amounts of what gas? BUUUZZZZZ that's right - methane!!! And what is methane best known as? Er the super greenhouse gas?

My guess is that planting rice on rooftops would only help increase the humidity and temperature in Tokyo.

Gardens in general make sense. Rice paddies are insane.
