ABC: Brown wages anti-logging campaign in Japan
Greens leader Bob Brown has taken his anti-logging campaign to Japan, saying its paper companies' imports of Australian woodchips are rapidly destroying native forests in Tasmania. "What is happening in Tasmania is so unnecessary. We live in a world where forests are rapidly diminishing everywhere," Senator Brown said in Tokyo. Earlier, he tried to hold meetings with Japanese paper firms Oji Paper, Nippon Paper Industries and Mitsubishi to discuss the logging issue but they turned down his request for talks. In separate letters to Senator Brown, the Japanese companies said they declined his invitation due to a pending lawsuit against him and other environmental activists by Australia's biggest forestry firm Gunns Limited for "corporate vilification" and disruption of logging operations....more...

50% of the worlds woodchipping industry goes to japan 8O

to prop up a already INSANE construction obsession..most japanese WOULD NOT HAVE A CLUE WHERE THE WOOD CAME FROM.

Japanese forests are left intact.

I remember seeing a program on telly (god knows when) about the plywood boards used when pouring concrete in large constructions. The plywood is of course removed after the concrete sets but instead of cleaning it and reusing they just burnt it. Why? Because it was actually cheaper to buy new stuff!!

This is the same with the forests. It's cheaper to buy nice rainforest timber from developing nations.

The Mercury: Forestry Tasmania staff urged to lobby in Japan
A FURORE has erupted over a memo sent from Forestry Tasmania chief Evan Rolley to all staff and logging contractors. In the leaked email, Mr Rolley called on the 850 staff and 1400 contractors working for Forestry Tasmania to urgently consider contacting the Nippon Paper Group in Japan to express their support for the timber industry in Tasmania. The Forestry Tasmania managing director said in his memo, sent on Friday, that green groups were putting pressure on Chinese and Japanese customers of hardwood pulpwood from Tasmania to cease purchase of woodchips from native forests. He urged all of his employees and contractors to write to or email Nippon Paper before yesterday, when the company's deadline for reviewing its wood-purchasing policies closed.
...Greens leader Peg Putt blasted the email, claiming it showed an "alarming and unacceptable" politicisation of the state public sector...She called for Mr Rolley to be sacked or severely reprimanded because he had gone "beyond the boundaries" of proper behaviour for the head of a government body.
