Japanese Siblings Live With Dead Parent


TOKYO - Police on Tuesday questioned three siblings after it was discovered they had been living with the decomposed corpse of their father for nearly a decade, an official said.



Police found the body of Kyujiro Kanaoka lying on a futon bed at the family's home in Itami city in Hyogo prefecture in western Japan, said a prefectural police spokesman, who declined to be identified.


Kanaoka's three elderly children, all in their 70s or older, told police they thought their father was still alive but that one of them recently had consulted a relative about the possibility that he might be dead, the spokesman said.


Police were investigating the cause of Kanaoka's death. Judging from the condition of his decomposed body, Kanaoka may have died as long as 10 years ago, the spokesman said.


Had he been alive, the man would be 107 years old. Hyogo prefecture had registered Kanaoka as its oldest living resident, public broadcaster NHK said.

According to municipal officials, Kyujiro Kanaoka was named the oldest man in the city in 1999. Since then, the city mayor visited the man's home every year in September, but his family refused to allow the mayor to meet with him, saying he was bedridden.

I couldn't imagine anyone being that stupid so it was obviously a con. But keeping a dead body in the house for ten years just so you can claim to have the oldest person in town trophy. You'd think they would do a midnight body removal or something.

There has to be a good link somewhere on ways to tell if someone is dead.

This reminds me of the following scary story from Key West, Florida.

Elena died in October 1931, aged just 22.

The heartbroken Von Cosel paid for a lavish funeral for his beloved, and she was buried.
Unable to resist, one dark night in April 1933, Von Cosel stole Elena from the crypt and took her to his airship (which he had christened 'Countess Elaine' - one day, he planned to fly with Elena to the stars). Here, he began the job of resurrection. For the next seven years, he held her body together with piano wire, put glass eyes where her real ones used to be, made a wig of her own hair and, piece by piece, strenthened her skin with wax and silk. He treated her with lotions and potions and electrotherapy. Amongst his ressurection tools was a million volt tesla coil. He serenaded her with his home-made organ and slept beside her.

City's 'oldest man' actually dead for 13 years

ITAMI, Hyogo -- A man, who was believed to be the oldest man in Hyogo Prefecture until his decomposed body was found earlier this month, actually died about 13 years ago, police have said.
Kyujiro Kanaoka, from Itami, was believed alive at age 107 until his decomposed body was found at his home.
After Hyogo police officers analyzed his body and questioned his relatives, they said on Wednesday that Kanaoka died from illness or old age sometime around 1992.
Hyogo Prefecture and Itami city officials plan to ask the relatives to return pensions and other types of old-age allowances paid after he died.
The city then will probably refund monies paid into elderly care plans by his relatives after his death. (Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, March 24, 2005)
