Food and Drink on Expo Danger List

Japan Times: Expo hit for seizing food, drinks at gates
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi has asked organizers of the World Expo in Aichi Prefecture to consider allowing visitors to bring their own food and drinks onto the grounds, government officials said Wednesday. Many visitors have complained about the controversial ban prohibiting them from bringing their own food and drinks into the expo. The Japan Association for the 2005 Aichi World Expo claimed it has banned packed lunches due to concerns over food poisoning. It claimed bottled and canned drinks have been prohibited as an antiterrorism measure...Visitors have also complained that food at the expo venue is over-priced; vendors are charging about 1,000 yen for simple dishes such as noodles as well as curry and rice.

MDN: Koizumi wins Expo bento battle
Average families scored a win Thursday as Aichi World Expo organizers will bow to pressure from Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and allow visitors to bring in hand-made bento lunches, according to the premier's mail magazine...But canned and bottled drinks, as well as pre-packed bento, seem likely to remain banned.

 Just hide them in your family robot ...

Here's a security camera shot of a girl sneaking some nori-rolls out of her droid in a quiet spot between two stalls ...

She was later caught and her home planet destroyed, but the plan remains a good one.

Asahi: Doctor warns of strokes if PET bottle ban continues at Aichi Expo
Aichi Expo organizers and pavilion operators are preparing for the summer heat with shelters, drink stations and high-tech devices that can cool off overheated visitors. But tourists and doctors say one other move could make an expo outing more comfortable-while staving off a potential disaster. They want the expo to allow visitors to bring in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles. "If the ban on PET bottles stays, we may be seeing a lot of patients collapsing at our sites, suffering cerebral strokes," warned Hiroshi Noguchi, a doctor involved in the expo medical control council...more...

Doctor warns of strokes if PET bottle ban continues at Aichi Expo

05/11/2005
By MASANARI MATSUDA The Asahi Shimbun

NAGOYA-Aichi Expo organizers and pavilion operators are preparing for the summer heat with shelters, drink stations and high-tech devices that can cool off overheated visitors.

But tourists and doctors say one other move could make an expo outing more comfortable-while staving off a potential disaster. They want the expo to allow visitors to bring in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles.

``If the ban on PET bottles stays, we may be seeing a lot of patients collapsing at our sites, suffering cerebral strokes,'' warned Hiroshi Noguchi, a doctor involved in the expo medical control council.

The ban is in place as an anti-terrorism measure, although flasks and thermoses can be taken inside.

``We can't help it,'' an expo official said, citing the global situation after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States. The official also noted that many dignitaries will be visiting the world exposition.

The ban and the heat have already produced complaints...all the rest.
