Big quake in Torishima, 20 albatrosses injured

Postby dimwit » Wed Apr 20, 2005 9:17 pm

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale has jolted the Pacific Ocean east of Japan near an uninhabited volcanic island.

...Torishima is now known as a breeding ground of the endangered albatross.

Sounds like tons of flying shit. An interesting question that this story provokes; does bird shit undergo liquification when shaken violently? :?

Well, if it wasn't enough for an endangered albatross to be ridiculed and called a "fool-bird" by the Japanese ("Ahodori'") and then be relegated to a "sanctuary" on a live volcano, now the US' 35th Fighter Squadron has just completed a week-long air strike on them:

Pilots assigned to the 35th Fighter Squadron completed a week and a half of dropping live ordnance July 3 [2007] on a Japanese bombing range in an effort to refine their war-time skills.

The squadron, known as the 'Pantons,' participated in the weapons drop using the small, uninhabited Japanese island of Toroshima . . .

. . . Pilots assigned to the 8th Fighter Wing "Wolf Pack" are making use of the Japanese range as the wing's primary targeting facility, located in Korea, is closed . . . more
