Reuters: Fabled Japanese war treasure still draws dreamers
BAGUIO, Philippines (Reuters) - Spending a year digging a 37-metre deep shaft under your house in search of buried treasure would be seen as a sign of mental infirmity in most countries. In the Philippines, it is regarded as normal...Babot, the chosen nickname of the house's owner, and his two associates look on proudly, pointing out features of the professionally dug shaft that include a ventilation tube to guard against poison gas booby traps. These men would be easy to dismiss as cranks if it weren't for the thousands of other treasure hunters who devote themselves to finding the vast amounts of gold they say was left by retreating Japanese forces at the end of World War Two. It sometimes seems that every Filipino knows someone with a map showing an X marking the spot...more...

Nothing really new here and there are dozens of books and articles on Yamashita's Gold but I couldn't find much of a mention on FG

Surprising that it hasn't been a topic. My gut feeling is that almost all the gold and property they looted was spent on the military. Afterall Japan was spending up to 70% of their GDP on the military before Pearl Harbour. I doubt they will ever find anything substantial unless they raise some of the missing cargo ships that were carrying the gold.
