IOL: A million yen for just a taste
One million yen may seem a fortune for a liquor bottle, but a Japanese seller said on Friday its premium whisky distilled over half a century has been such a hit it stopped accepting orders within a day. Suntory announced the sale of the liquor, Yamazaki 50 Years, billed as "a jewel of single-malt whisky", on its website on Wednesday afternoon for 50 bottles only, with orders accepted through liquor shops and department stores. "We have already stopped accepting orders as we received more than 50 orders by 11am on Thursday," company spokesperson Aya Takemoto said. "Orders came in much faster than we expected," she said.

I've seen 50 year old McCallen here for around 500,000yen, and some 60yo (can't remember what) for 600,000yen. Guess there are a lot of people with more money than sense.

25 year old is more than good enough for me and I doubt I would be able to tell the difference between 25 and 50. (Not likely that I'll find out anyway!!) Recently 25yo is hard to find at a decent price so it has been 18 year old instead.

Postby etto_neh » Mon May 16, 2005 4:39 pm

But have any of you been to any one-shot bars that'll have Wild Turkey right next to the Wild Turkey 12 year right next to the Jameson and Jameson 12 year right next to the Glenlevit (sp?) 12 year right next to the Johnny W blue then black?

I almost always catch myself when I ask 'How much is.......' then, well, DUH, it's all the same price.

//300 yen glenlevit, ishibashi, osaka... just sayin.

Not a Johnny Walker fan, but I doubt you'd find Blue for 300yen. 26oz bottle of JW Blue = about 15,000yen or about 576yen/1oz single. You can find it at 12,000 sometimes, but that still wouldn't work.

I was actually wondering about this, and for wine too, is there any point where it's too old? There must be.

I don't know much about wine, but I know a little about Scotch. Below are some very general statements:

Between 8 year and 12 year Scotch there is a huge difference. 8 year is about like you would imagine drinking gasoline to be. The after-taste is horrible too. This is cheap and nasty shit.

12 year is starting to get quite smooth, but the prices are still quite reasonable.

18 year is also quite a jump -- usually. A good 18yo Scotch will be noticeably smoother than 12yo. If you regularly drink a good 18yo and then have some 12yo it's a pretty big shock at first.

25 year Scotch is really really nice. By the time you get to this price range (15,000 to 25,000 per bottle, sometimes more) things change. Generally only the best Scotch is kept this long, and after 25 years it is smoooooooth.

After this I can't say. I've had 30yo before, but it wasn't anything different from 25 really. 40, 50, 60 years? No idea. Certainly part of the cost is the rarity -- there just is not much of it around.

The law of diminishing returns will certainly apply though. No matter how good it is, it isn't going to be 50x or more better than a 15 to 20,000yen 25yo Scotch.

And if you mix your Scotch with water (or coke! 8O) it really won't matter WHAT you buy.

I usually drink bourbon. Although they don't advertise it, it's usually four years old I think. I like the rough taste personally. I've had old Scotch but it don't get me no drunker.

Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

No, they already paid for that, and now they're reaping the bitter rewards.

Yeah. I like Four Roses and Jim Beam and that stuff. I drank a bottle of Early Times last weekend. I mix it with water or O-Cha.
