Police suspect arson in bicycle lot fire

A fire broke out early Sunday in the bicycle parking lot of a public apartment in Higashi-Murayama, Tokyo, burning about 60 bicycles, about 20 motorcycles and the exterior walls of the apartment building, police said.

A 35-year-old resident of the eighth floor injured her leg as she fled the blaze.

Police suspect arson.

Maybe, I am getting old and cynical, but even motorcycles don't usually burn unless some one put a match to them.

Newspaper translations often leave a lot to be desired... :(

At home wouldn't this be written as "Police are treating it as an incident of arson." or something similar?

Translation is a bitch of a job though... I certainly wouldn't want to do it.

Not necessarily. Some bikes don't have metal frames (mine doesn't, it's carbon) and many have extra junk attached to them that will burn more readily. And a fire breaking out doesn't mean someone deliberately set it]Typical causes of accidental fires are cooking accidents, overheated or short circuited electrical connections, spontaneous combustion of oils, welding sparks, burst gas lines, sparks from fireplaces, lightning, cigarette butts, left-on appliances, reacting chemicals. The list of all the possible causes is very long.

If a fire is not the result of an accident, it must have been deliberately-lit; arson.

No, it'd probably be written 'police suspect arson,' just as it is.

I would have been happy to settle for a metal frame, but the largest frame they had on-hand was the all carbon one. Looks a lot like the one in the picture.

Honestly, I have no idea about the parts - I basically consulted the guy who fixed most of the bikes in the store and then pointed to stuff on the wall. After some initial teething problems, I'm quite satisfied.

:lol: You might just be the only guy in the world with a carbon frame who is not interested in bikes! ;) No worries though, glad to hear the bike is working out well.
