Asia Times: The hype behind India's Japan ties
Addressing an Asian Security conference at New Delhi in January, Indian Defense Minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee said "Today Indo-Japanese relations also have a strategic importance, which is quite obvious when we glance at the world atlas...There is a growing acceptance that India and Japan share a certain affinity on a number of issues. India and Japan have a convergence on energy issues and have joint concerns about the security of sea lines of communications and vital choke points in the Indian Ocean. We also share similar concerns about WMD proliferation. Concerns about WMD terrorism are also equally shared. India and Japan also have views about the restructuring of the UN and the Security Council in particular."...more...

Special relationship, unique ties

One of the few Asian nations nippon can still afford to bribe with checkbook diplomacy

and Maoists and the Commies still own both their asses, Welcome to the land of the setting Sun, perhaps a giant like India will weather the global economic change but Japan is sinking in massive debts and falling birth rates. Everyone say thank you to the Maoist commies : it is they who keep Japan afloat
to quote them - spectacular increase in the Sino-Indian trade in recent years has been largely due to the large-scale buying of material by Chinese industries from India to meet the galloping needs of the Chinese economy.

Shri Pranab Mukherjee wants a donation - just don't ask governor Blinky for his thoughts when some Indian refugee or asylum seeker comes knocking

From Japan 's perspective India is one of the few countries in Asia who have balanced and historically no-disagreements type of trade ties. More importantly India's economy is not tied to the well-being of the Chinese economy. India's major trade partners are the US and the gulf nations (for oil) so it would make sense for Japan to try and improve the trade relationship (and vice versa) to counter the threat of "chinese dominance" of Asia.
Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms should be the name of a store, not a government agency.
