It's difficult to think of a worse gift than the karaoke craze but, in my opinion, Japan's Popillia japonica manages to take top prize for worst Japanese import. At a New Jersey nursery in 1916 the first beetles were spotted on U.S. shores. Every June since, the screams of gardeners and stampedes of angry home owners into garden centers have announced the spring hatch of the green-headed, copper-bodied beetles.
