Kyodo via Japan Today: Court acquits Canadian woman indicted over stimulant smuggling
CHIBA — The Chiba District Court on Tuesday acquitted a 24-year-old Canadian woman indicted on a charge of smuggling stimulants into Japan, saying she did not know she was carrying the drugs. The woman was accused of carrying 25 kgs of amphetamines in her suitcase when she arrived at Narita airport from Canada in June last year along with a 33-year-old Canadian man, who was sentenced in February to 13 years in prison. According to the ruling, she had believed she was carrying a cargo of saffron because the Canadian man told her he would export saffron to Japan by hiding it in coffee bags to avoid paying customs duty. "There is reasonable evidence that she believed saffron was hidden in her suitcase," the court said.

I can only assume the guy gave evidence that he alone had packed the bags and had told her it was only saffron.

Umm, I'm not totally sure, but I believe that the tariff on coffee is 10% higher than on saffron. :D
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

I suspect prayer at work. She'll probably become a revival speaker. She should at least get fined for being stupid.

Maybe she real cute.

(Or, she passed a police-adminstered lie detector test so they cut her some slack.)

The charge is dumb in public with priors!

A similar acquittal:
Kyodo via Japan Today: Swiss woman acquitted on stimulant smuggling charge
The Chiba District Court acquitted a 28-year-old Swiss woman Wednesday on charges of smuggling stimulants, citing reasonable doubt about her intention. She was arrested last Oct 24 at Narita airport, after arriving on a flight from Malaysia carrying 2.2 kilograms of stimulants in her suitcase, but she pleaded not guilty, saying she did not know the drugs were in her suitcase. Judge Takanori Hikosaka recognized that the suitcase was handed to her in Malaysia by a man who claimed to be a Turk. The judge said it was no wonder the woman took the man's request at face value when he asked her to take the suitcase to his partner in Japan for a business to carry gold and jewelry from Japan to Malaysia.

That still don't fly. You're in a third country airport and a guy you don't know, an arab looking man who claims to be a turk says "Hey, you look like a good sport, how bout carrying me bag to J-land. Its only got Saffron in it". You then grab the bag and sprint to the baggage counter to check it in. Right.

If she's truly not guilty, I would like to talk to her about buying some of my ocean front property in Yamanashi.
