China prepares for the Olympics...basketball riot

China sees 'night of shame' with basketball brawl
BEIJING (Reuters) July 30--- A basketball game between China and visiting Puerto Rico deteriorated into a mass brawl that some state media termed the most shameful night of Chinese basketball and a bad example for the Olympic hosts.....
The bad feeling spilled into the stands where 3,000 home fans hurled insults and missiles, the China Daily reported on Saturday. Officials abandoned the game as the visitors fled to the locker room, one shielding his head with a plastic chair....
China's basketball association deplored the violence as setting a poor example just three years before Beijing hosts the summer Olympics and said it would adopt measures to prevent such violence from recurring.....
Victory in the Stankovic Cup game, abandoned with China ahead 91-80, was later awarded to the hosts. A basketball association official said China accepted the result but should apologize to fans....
in a story headlined "China suffers night of shame," China Daily said the melee "badly hurt the growing reputation of Chinese basketball."
....In August 2004, angry fans went on a rampage in the capital after the national team lost the Asian Cup final to Japan.

I could be a cock and say this is what happens when you repress the masses...

But to be honest, this is not so uncommon... The UK is the home of the hooligan...

In the US, the players themselves duke it out and start the riots....

Even after reading that report Taro, I still couldn't get why they were brawling..

The fighting erupted at Beijing Capital Gymnasium on Friday night after two Chinese players charged off the bench to fight Puerto Rico players in the dying moments of a game in which China was leading comfortably.


What the hell sparked that?

The brawl started when China's Yi went in for a layup and was fouled hard by Puerto Rico centre Manuel Narvaez Events escalated when Li and Mo stormed the court from the bench -sparking violence from both sets of players.

Li, who was not even playing in the match because of injury, and Mo charged the court to fight the Puerto Rico players with just one minute and 28 seconds left on the clock in a game China were winning comfortably 91-80.

A benched player started this mess??? OVer a hard foul?? They should kick that bastard out of the league for a while and fine him some serious yaun. :D
