Has anyone ever tried to suggest to their J-girlfriend that she use the pill? Ain't gonna' happen. They seem to feel that it's too "unnatural" for the female body. Even if you're in a long-term relationship, the pill doesn't seem to be an option with Japanese women. I heard that the side effects that cause such concern may have to do with the kind of pill available in Japan--it may be a less-sophisticated form that causes more side-effects than the pills available in the West. Anybody else familiar with this?

It IS unnatural for the female body to think it's constantly pregnant. One of the pesky side-effects is weight gain... an ex-girlfriend of mine started taking the pill when she was with her new boyfriend and slapped on an additional 10 pounds.

As for the conspiracy, I'm sure the Japanese government won't have a problem with Japanese girls taking the pill when they're with foreigners... don't want those pesky gene pool abberations, right?

There are a lot of lingering misconceptions regarding the Pill in Japan. One major one is that it has strong side effects. Until the contraceptive version was available the only thing women could get was a form used for menstrual problems that was much stronger. The contraceptive version is far weaker but women still fear it will have the same effect.

I get my 'script from home!! Actually I get most medicines, vitamins, hair-colour, deodorant, tampons, stockings etc etc sent from home - there are just some things that a girl can't live without.. and sometimes there is just no substitute.

Yep. After Vitamin-V made such a hit on the black market the govt put it on the fast track for approval. Took only 9 months. The Pill supporters howled so the old coots in the bureaucracy had to give in. At that time there were already known cases of people dying from Viagra misuse. I talked to a guy who worked at Pfizer and he said there was a case in Chiba where a Japanese oyaji took a whole bunch of pills at once. Gave himself a boner that wouldn`t go down for hours!

Have to agree that the Pill is not healthy or natural BUT I think that one of the issues overlooked is a Womans ability to control her own reproductive system.Just look back to the 60s when it was first introduced in the West.

Also, there is much more profit in abortions. The Pill isnt gonna make Japanese doctors as much money.

Viagra, on the other hand is a win -win.Make loads of money and keep men happy, thinking how sexually powerful they are and not thinking about how much they hate being a salary man and powerless.

So, less profits and empowerment of Women. No wonder they dont want to promote the Pill. Viva La Viagra!

Yeah the pill is unnatural...just like the other medicine we take that makes our lives so much better. Embrace modern medicine, or have a dozen kids (1/3 of whom survive through infancy) and die at 35 like in the olden days.

Regarding the pill in Japan -

I think the Pill is becoming more and more popular actually here in Japan. However it is only becoming popular for women in their mid twenties for several reasons. The first being that young teenage girls getting pregnant probably couldn't afford the pill to begin with but I think the real issue with young women not prescribing to it is the fact that they would probably consider it very embarresing. To actually go to the Doctor's and talk to him about wanting to prescribe to the pill is probably a bit too much for the average 19 year old teengage J-girl!!

Well it wasn`t only the medical establishment that blocked the approval of the Pill. Another major lobby was.......Buddhist shrines. The priests didn`t want to lose the money they were making on services for the spirits of aborted children. Gotta pay for their Benz you know....

I was here, years ago, when a prominent govt. health official said that the Japanese people had no reason to fear the Aids epidemic . why use a condom? And "HELLO!", getting pregnant is an accepted part of the marriage process in Japan. I know so many cases of "dekita kekkon" that its frightening. Why worry about a condom or the pill when every girls dream is to have a white wedding, albeit shotgun.

And side effects.... ?! Are pills in Japan that different? I mean many many girls are taking it in Europe but to be honest I don't know about side effects if the girl who is taking it is healthy.
