Business Week 2005 article on CerberusU.S. hedge fund Cerberus Capital Management has filed a libel suit against the Mainichi Shimbun, a major Japanese newspaper, demanding $100 million in damages for a report that linked the fund to Japanese organized crime, local media reports said Thursday. The Mainichi Shimbun's front-page story in its Jan. 12 morning edition (Japanese) reported that a Cerberus unit had paid a brokerage commission to people linked to Japanese organized crime for a land deal in Tokyo. The suit said the newspaper report "wrongfully and maliciously accused Cerberus and their related entities of being associated with members of Japanese organized crime or Yakuza," Reuters reported.
