How to not get kicked off an airplane

Postby dimwit » Sun Feb 26, 2006 6:11 pm

JAL in a desperate move to not lose anymore customers chose not turf a disruptive passenger who assaulted a flight attendant.

Air rage goes unpunished on JAL domestic flight

From the Daily Yomiuri

A passenger on a Japan Airlines flight from Kagoshima Airport refused to stop e-mailing on his cell phone and assaulted a flight attendant who asked him to stop, the airline said.

The man was allowed to stay on the flight after promising to behave himself.

The departure of Friday's JAL Flight 1864 bound for Haneda Airport was delayed for about one hour.

According to JAL, the man in his 30s refused to stop e-mailing on his cell phone despite a flight attendant's repeated warnings, even after the aircraft started taxiing.

Though he finally turned off his cell phone, he went to the galley area and grabbed the flight attendant by the collar, saying: "Don't come out of here again. I hate seeing your face," and spat at her.

WTF I would have thought airline safety regulations would assure that assaulting a flight attendant would be a case where charges were guaranteed to be laid .

We'll they've lost my business; I always avoid flying on airlines that let punks, assholes, and hijackers delay my flight without punishment..

'JAL; shoving 'wa' up your ass is our business'.. :p

What was the flight? A plane load of whimps that let this dude manhandle the gal, spit on her and rant and rave? The other passengers could have stopped that in a flash.

A dude like that you simply open the front door and stick his ass in the fans on the inboard, head first, complete with keitai and walla, problem solved.

Yeah, I was astounded to read that the guy didn't even get a slap on the wrist. Then again, I know a woman who works at JAL's ticket counter at Haneda, and she said she gets change thrown at her, spit on, shouted at, etc, all the time and she's expected to just stoically accept it. In some respects, women are treated like chattel in Japan to an extent unknown outside the burka-wearing world.

As long as they're not gaijin; a Japanese airline filled with Japanese passengers flying domestic, an FG trying to 'do the right thing' might be asking for trouble..

I'm not so sure about that. I wouldn't have a problem, being Swave and DeBoner as I am. You might because of all the outstanding warrants out for you after the Capt'ns party last night!

My outstanding warrants might be the reason I refrain from getting involved. ;)

And whatever happened last night, it wasn't me.. :-D

Well said. I'm going to write them a letter and let them know that other passengers demand a safe and professional atmosphere on an airplane.

Here's their response

Thank you for your e-mail dated February 26, 2006. We appreciate your taking the time to contact Japan Airlines.

Above all, we would like to assure you that safety is our first and foremost concern. Please be assured that our commitment to safety will never be compromised under any circumstances. We certainly agree with your statement that maintaining a safe, calm and professional atmosphere inside the cabin is of utmost importance.

With regards to the incident reported in the press, our headquarters report that while this passenger's behavior was certainly inappropriate, at no time was the flight or cabin unsafe. Shortly after pushing back from the gate at Kagoshima Airport, the passenger in question continued to use his cell phone. In accordance with safety regulations, our cabin crew reminded the passenger that the use of electronic devices was strictly prohibited. At this time, the passenger became upset and, unfortunately, lashed out at the cabin attendant. This behavior was immediately reported to the Captain, who promptly returned the aircraft to the gate to remove the passenger.

After arrival at the gate, the passenger was interviewed extensively by Japan Airlines in-flight and ground staff. During this process, the passenger apologized and expressed deep remorse for his behavior:roll:. At no time did the passenger appear out of control, unruly, or under the influence of any substance.

Following careful consideration, the final decision to allow the passenger to reboard was made following consultation with the Captain, cabin attendants, and ground staff. Please note, however, that this permission was granted contingent on several conditions (immediate and future) that the passenger agreed to meet. While we are not at liberty to disclose the specifics of these conditions, please be assured that at no time was safety ever in question.

Once again, we sincerely appreciate your taking the time to share your concerns with us. Please be assured that your correspondence has been forwarded to all concerned departments, as well as our headquarters for review. It is our hope that this isolated incident will not dissuade you from choosing Japan Airlines for future international or domestic travel (within Japan), and that we will have the opportunity to serve you on a future JAL flight.

Sincerely,

Customer Relations Desk
The Americas

I'll tell you what. If the captain can't kick a man off the plane he ain't the captain.

Nice one AK

... At no time did the passenger appear out of control, unruly, or under the influence of any substance ...

Presumably they mean except for when he "lashed out at the cabin attendant".

... the final decision to allow the passenger to reboard was made following consultation with the Captain, cabin attendants, and ground staff. Please note, however, that this permission was granted contingent on several conditions (immediate and future) that the passenger agreed to meet ...

I think one of my conditions would have been outside seating for the arsehole.

A "humiliated" couple whose drunken fumblings outraged passengers on a transatlantic plane have been fined for being drunk on board an aircraft.
