Japan's New Gasoline Source? Cow Dung
Los Angeles Times, March, 4 2006
Scientists in energy-poor Japan say they have found a new source of gasoline .... cattle dung.
Sakae Shibusawa of the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology said his team had successfully extracted 0.042 ounce of gasoline from every 3.5 ounces of cow dung by applying high pressure and heat....more...

Hmmm, by my calculations Taro, you ought to be able to get 20km a liter based only on your normal weekday output!

Milk puts me into orbit.

Only problem is, the plumbing would probably blow if I put too much of THAT kind of fuel in the tank.

I wonder just how much energy has to go into getting a tiny bit of energy out of a pile of...dung.

There's certainly no shortage of...raw material... but it probably requires more energy than it'll produce.

I suppose a lot of nuclear-produced electric energy in return for a little energy that's useable in an engine is a fair cost, at least. So long as you're not burning gas to make it gas :D

Guardian: Toyota reveals dung development
The car manufacturer Toyota today announced the invention of a more environmentally friendly way of composting cow dung. The company, which developed the Prius, one of the world's most environmentally friendly cars, said it had developed a new process that speeds up the composting of dung. The process dramatically reduces the amount of nitrous oxide, methane and other greenhouse gases released. A new compound cuts the amount of time it takes to convert cow dung into a high-quality compost from between 90 and 180 days to 45 days, and also cuts the odours released by decomposing cow manure.

"After using this formula, the neighbours stopped complaining about the pungent smell," Reuters reported a cattle farmer who had used the new compound as saying. Japanese farmers have to dispose of 89m tonnes of livestock manure every year, according to official figures, with one dairy cow producing 50kg of dung. Toyota - the world's second-largest car maker - has been involved in biotechnology since 1998, using it to fight global warming and promoting the reuse and recycling of resources.

Retail gasoline prices in Japan may soar to a record high above 170 yen per liter in June, as Nippon Oil Corp. and other oil distributors plan to raise shipment prices by more than 10 yen in the largest-ever month-to-month markup.

I'm extremely concerned about the dung supply. Cow dung is already endangered, as Taro pointed out a few years ago. Now, I found the stall below in Ito-Ya in Ginza.

I predict a shortage soon. I suspect that next, they're going after the goats.

If this is going to create such a great problem, I recommend you call the dog out of retirement to work on the dung solution!
