Japan Gets Really Really Serious About Global Warming

Japan Cracks Down On Wasteful Energy Consumption

Japan's Environment Ministry has ordered workers to leave and lights to go off at its headquarters by 8:00 pm in a fresh campaign to cut greenhouse gases, officials said.

"As a matter of fact, we cannot expect much from the lights-out project in itself,

"We sometimes have to launch this kind of dare. Otherwise we cannot achieve tough goals."

Japan, host of the landmark Kyoto Protocol, has launched a series of campaigns to fight global warming, such as encouraging people to wear cool clothes in the summer and bundle up in the winter to save on electricity.

But Japan is behind in its efforts to meet the Kyoto treaty, which requires the world's second largest economy to cut greenhouse gas emissions six percent by 2012 from the 1990 level.

I don't know if it's still true, but it used to be that just the vending machines in Japan used more electricy that the entire continent of Africa.

Daylight Saving Time wouldn't hurt either.. But the 4:00am sunrise has kind of grown on me.. I think I would be too 'confused' if I had the change the clocks twice a year.. ;)

what a joke, they don't eve know how to turn their engines off when their parked! took a ferry today, waited for it over an hour in beautiful sunlight outside where every truck and car had their engines on and windows up!
then we boarded the 1 1/2 hour ferry ride while nearly all of them stayed in their cars/trucks...idyling.

Death Blow Dealt to Global Warming

Staff at Japan's Health Ministry are being asked to ditch the elevator and take the stairs as the ministry strives to conserve energy.

The idea was proposed by a senior ministry official who overheard employees grumbling about the long wait for elevators since the ministry suspended the daytime use of six of its 18 elevators to curb global warming, the Asahi said.

Another good reason why I always pay my fair share of taxes.

Japanese Waters Warming Faster Than World Average
http://www.terradaily.com/reports/Japanese_Waters_Warming_Faster_Than_World_Average_999.html
The temperature of waters around Japan has risen at a much faster rate than the rest of the world's oceans in the past century, partly because of global warming, according to an official report.

OK, that was really weird and I was wondering what sort of movie that was from. Then the last caption brought the whole thing into focus. Impressive.
Very moving.
I like stuff like that where the viewer has a certain perception carefully nutured by the director and then have the perspective turned inside out by something simple.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

Ditto, although it hurts if I have to agree on anything with GJ!

Nicely done!

Really? I thought it was just a clip about a guy fucking with people, and he turns out to be the wind. Thanks for that lucid comment, I hadn't looked at it that way.
