Kamakura gets some good waves during a typhoon. It is the only beach where the waves are ridable due to the angle of the coast.
Had some great times out there.

Out to sea...

Postby Mike Oxlong » Fri May 19, 2006 1:59 pm

According to the local news, it was a sunny day where the boys were swimming. The typhoon passed well to the south of them. Unfortunately, sea swells caused by the typhoon reached the island and dragged the boys out into open water. Never turn your back on the sea...

It's kind of a Logan's Run for Japan. Nobody knows why they do it, they just do. As soon as there is a typhoon or tsunami warning, they head for the beach and are completely surprised when a wave takes them to Fiji!

Update - locals tell me that the boys who died were part of a group from "mainland Japan" on a school trip, and were under the supervision of teachers from their school when the waves took them.

They were on Hateruma Island, IIRC.
